The myspace problem • Facing competition from Facebook, MySpace must respond • Should they build their own platform, or adopt Google’s OpenSocial platform?
Facebook Platform’s growth Corresponded with an increase of 3 million Facebook users from 24 million users to 27 users, a 15% increase
Opensocial • Pros: • Sponsorship: Approached by Google • Costs: Gives MySpace ability to match Facebook functionality without major investments • “open source” • Existing partnership with Google • Search engines and advertising • Goodwill
Opensocial • Cons: • No freedom to make changes to platform • User data made available to Google through Google’s own sites • Forgo application exclusivity • Uncertainty
Develop own platform • Pros • Easier to extract payments from application providers • Differentiation from other social networking sites • Con • Costly to develop • If platform fails, large sunk costs • Need to respond to Facebook threat in a timely fashion • Might not be coding that application developers are familiar with
opensocial • Best choice • Timely • Less costly • Company goodwill • Attract more developers on an open source platform
Other ways to improve • Simpler user interface with more privacy controls • External Content • relax Terms of Service to allow MySpace users access to more content • Research and develop new features • From 2005 to 2007, MySpace looked exactly the same • Target specific demographics
