  3. Their Question • 1st occurrence: 2:17 “Where is God’s justice in this wicked world?” • 2nd occurrence: 3:13-15 “Why serve God when we see no reward for it?”

  4. Their Question • But wait! 3:5,7 • So their real question: “Why bother obeying God when injustice goes unpunished and righteousness goes unrewarded?”

  5. Their Question • Shortsighted vision excuses: • “no big deal” sins • “no one will ever know” sins • “everybody’s doing it” sins • sins of omission

  6. God’s Answer • 1stanswer: 3:1-5 “I’m about to send my two messengers” (v1) “And it will be unbearable” (v2) • His people will be refined (v3-4) • His enemies will be judged (v5)

  7. God’s Answer • 2nd answer: 3:16-4:3 God’s Day of Judgment is coming • His people will be delivered (v17,2) • The wicked will be destroyed (v1,3)

  8. The Day of the Lord • There’s 2 of them! • Is Imminent 1 Thessalonians 5:2–3 For you yourselves know full well that the day of the Lord will come just like a thief in the night. While they are saying, “Peace and safety!” then destruction will come upon them suddenly like labor pains upon a woman with child, and they will not escape.

The Day of the Lord 1 Thessalonians 4:16–17 For the Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel and with the trumpet of God, and the dead in Christ will rise first. Then we who are alive and remain will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air, and so we shall always be with the Lord.

Unless those days had been cut short, no life would have been saved; but for the sake of the elect those days will be cut short.”

  13. The Day of the Lord • There’s 2 of them! • Is Imminent • Involves a series of events: • Rapture of the church • 7 year Tribulation • Return of Christ • Millennial Kingdom • Judgment & hell for the lost • Heaven & reward for believers

The Day of the Lord 1 Corinthians 3:13-15…each man’s work will become evident; for the day will show it because it is to be revealed with fire, and the fire itself will test the quality of each man’s work. If any man’s work which he has built on it remains, he will receive a reward. If any man’s work is burned up, he will suffer loss; but he himself will be saved, yet so as through fire.

The Day of the Lord • There’s 2 of them! • Is Imminent • Involves a series of events • Only one way to survive it – the gospel John 5:24 “Truly, truly, I say to you, he who hears My word, and believes Him who sent Me, has eternal life, and does not come into judgment, but has passed out of death into life.”

  16. God’s Application • Obey Me in your giving (3:7-8) • Obey Me in every way (4:4)

  17. “If Jesus shows up right now, will He be pleased, or will I be ashamed?” Live every day in light of that Day
