Text #1 • The microbes that cause infection are transmitted to people in one of three ways.Direct transmission involves bodily contact with an infected person, such as handshaking, kissing, or sexual relations. For example, a cold may be passed through a kiss, and herpes is transmitted through sexual contact. Second, indirect transmission occurs when microbes are passed from an infected person to an individual via airborne particles, dust, water, food, or anything else the infected person touches. For example, someone might catch the flu by drinking from a glass that has been used by a person with the flu. Or a person can catch a cold by breathing air into which someone has sneezed. Third, animals and insects can transmit microbes. Yellow fever, for instance, is spread through the bite of certain tropical mosquitoes. Flies carry harmful microbes on their feet, which they can transmit to people by landing on their food.

Text #2 • Many bosses share two weaknesses. First, they are often poor communicators. They tell people what to do and when to do it, without explaining the reasons for their rules, and they do not welcome feedback or questions. In addition, many bosses are workaholics. Their jobs tend to be their lives and they expect everybody who works for them to think and act the way they do. These bosses frown upon hearing that a family matter will keep an employee from working late, and they come out of their offices looking irritated if there is too much talk or laughter during a coffee break.
