I. Black Codes • Laws set up by southern states to keepFreedmen in a state of slavery. • Freedmen cannot: • Serve on Juries, Vote in local elections, hold office, marry a white person.
African Americans are not allowed to own or rent farms. • Slavery in disguise.
II.VotingSchemes • Poll tax: forces freedmen to pay a tax before voting. • Literacy Test: Freedmen must read and write before voting. • Grandfather Clause: If your grandfather was a slave you cannot vote.
