Who will we be helping? There are approximately 150 children who will need help with homework Ages range from kindergarten to high school.
Why you should help In 1991, a study involving an after-school tutoring program in which low-achieving second and third graders were tutored for three times a week by trained professionals, indicated that over 50% of the children being tutored made a full year’s gain in education, particularly reading. The other 50% made significant educational gains. --- U.S. Department of Education (1997) WSU mission statement: “A Community of learners improving our world.”
Why you should help One of the biggest concerns of the Maplewood community is the safety of their children – found through survey of the community done by WSU nursing students. The community center provides a safe and structured place for them to be after school. Gives them a place to go that is not out on the street getting into trouble Gives them access to adults who want to send the message that they care
