  2. The first Thanksgiving Atlantic pilgrim The Mayflower In 1620, 102 pilgrims crossed the Atlantic on a ship called the Mayflower so they could freely practice their religion. They traveled from England to America for nearly two months with great difficulty.

  3. The pilgrims arrived to America in winter. It was brutal. Many of the pilgrims were very sick.

  4. Then Spring came, and some Indians came to visit them. They showed the pilgrims how to plant crops like corn.

  5. In autumn 1621, after the Pilgrims’ first corn harvest proved successful, Governor William Bradford organized a celebratory feast and invited the Indians. It is now remembered as America’s “first Thanksgiving”.

  6. Thanksgiving today Today, Thanksgiving is celebrated on the fourth Thursday of November. Families and friends get together and eat a BIG Thanksgiving lunch.

  7. While everyone is sitting around the table, each person says something that they are thankful for. If the family is Christian, they will hold hands and someone will say a prayer right before eating.

  13. Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade float The parade takes place every Thanksgiving in New York City. Marching bands and dancers from all over the United States come to perform in the parade. Many people hold gigantic floats. It is also broadcasted live on national television.
