  2. What is a writing conference? Place to discuss craft and give suggestions to support student writing Opportunity to find out what your students are working on, provide direct instruction, and offer specific suggestions for improving their writing Turn and talk with a partner- what are 3 reasons writing conferences are essential?

  3. Think about… The goal of a conference is to sit down with a child and talk about their writing. Four Parts: • Research • Decide • Teach (give the student 1 craft lesson to work on after the conference is finished) • Make a record

  4. Issue to Consider Think about… But… How can you organize your classroom to support writing conferences? What will this type of teaching require from you? How will I know if I asked the right questions? How can I gain the experience needed to know which questions to ask?

Conferring Roles Role of the Teacher Role of the Student Student- learning about the writer Must have teachable moment- give student something to talk away with Ask questions Genre (mentor texts; charts) Sharing notebook Allow wait time Fistful of knowledge Be responsive Visualizing the next step (put words to their vision of doing the next steps) Be willing to share writing or ideas Ask questions
