The H4 “The cure for the common convoy.” Jon Howard, Stephen Kerschner, Austen Haines, Collin Goodruff
Project Goal • Develop a method to detect and avoid obstacles while maintaining formation. • Define technique to be utilized • Display warning and suggested collision avoidance method to driver. • Detect on-coming traffic and factor into decision process.
What does the H4 have to offer? • Based on Simplicity • Utilizes Multi-use Technology • Comparatively Inexpensive • Allows for Easy Black-Out Maneuverability
Design Specifications • Mid-Range Radar • 10m to 50m detection Range • Live Satellite Feed • Laptop with integrated display. • IR 360 Thermal Imager • + Night Vision
Camera Details • IR 360 Thermal Imager • Long range Germanium FLIR optics • CCTV camera • Image intensified generation 3 night vision camera IR 360 Thermal Imager Range: Human Sized Object 4.5 km
Color Infrared Image White Hot Infrared Image Generation 3 Night Vision
Display Laptop Screen Divided
Final Design IR-360 Camera Camera mounted in center with two needed antennas for radar. Radar Antenna
Calculations Considered During Design Process • 50km/hr = 13.89m/s • Time to react: 50m/13.98meters per second = 3.6 seconds to react • Turning Time = 2.5 seconds • This leaves 1.1 seconds to relay orders • Stopping time is 8.86 seconds at 50km/hr
Cost Material Cost- Mid Range Radar x3 = $1,500,000 Thermal/Night Vision Camera = 21,000 Headsets x3 = $1,600 Laptop x3 =$6,000 Total Material Cost = $1,528,600 Labor Cost- Projected Time To Install = 8 hours per vehicle x2 Technicians per vehicle at $30/hr x3 total vehicles =$1440 +test cost of $2,880 =5760 Total Basic Cost= $1,534,360 X1.3 Total Cost = $1,994,668 Price per Vehicle=$664,889.34
Conclusion • Simple and Highly Effective • Incorporates Several Different Technologies into One Heads Up Display • Allows for Blackout Maneuverability • Can Detect Long Range
