  3. Current Status of Membership in PELS • There are totally more than 7,480 members in PELS • Share of the membership from different regions

GOLD has held events at: ECCE 2010, Reception @ Point of View Lounge APEC 2011, Featured Speaker, Elizabeth Lions ECCE 2011, unveiled new logo @ student-industry dinner APEC 2012, Reception ECCE 2012, part of the student-industry dinner APEC 2013, Dinner with a Luminary (48 participants, 6 luminaries) Logo design contest Update

Recent Activities • Membership Committee meeting held March 20, 2013 in LongBeach, Ca • Attendees: 7 participants • GOLD: Dinner with a Luminary, March 19, 2013 at APEC • Value proposition to participant: Increase access within PELS • # Attendees: 49 (xx students, yy GOLD) • Cost: $5k (budgeted) ??? (final)

New Retention Initiatives • Students to GOLD • Increase Access • Dinner with a Luminary (APEC 2013) • Increase Recognition • New initiatives: Early Career award, student awards • Ex: Free year membership with a full conference registration for GOLD / student • Make it easy to “have that talk” with employer • Senior Member elevation • Senior Member advocacy, make it easy to become elevated

The Problem for Membership Growth • Most people outside USA know little about PELS except IEEE conference and magazine • They don’t know “what benefits they could get from the membership” except paying the annual fee and the less conference fee • There are no many relationships between IEEE PELS and other national professional society • Industry members seem to me in the minority

Membership Growth Plan • Increase more then 100 in northern American • Increase more than 500 members from outer northern American • The total number of PELS’s member would reach 10000 by the end of 2014 • Main steps: - 2013:40 from northern American 200 from other regions - 2014:60 from northern American 300 from other regions 2013.03.20

How to Implement the plan • Develop the joint members For example in China: • Major national academic organizations on power electronics include • China Electrotechnical Society (CES) 50000 members and 2000 senior members • China Power Supply Society CPSS) 30000 members and 1000 senior members • Chinese Electrical Engineering Society (CEES) —— 60000 members and 3000 senior members HVDC Transmission and Power Electronics Division

  11. How to Implement the plan “Memorandum of Understanding between The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, Incorporated and Chinese ElectrotechnicalSociety” Main terms include: 1. Visiting members 2. Joint activities 3. Coordination of technical meetings 4. Publications 5. Standards information 6. Membership – Joint membership

How to Implement the plan • Increase industry membership For example in China: • Rapid development of power electronics in China——over 23% each year. • China has been the one of world's largest power semiconductor markets. • In 2011, the power semiconductor sales in China accounted for 50% of • the global market. Market sales of power semiconductors

How to Implement the plan • Increase student membership For example in China: • Power Electronics in Chinese Universities • About 90 universities offer power electronics course • Among top 25 universities, in power electronics • Faculty and staff: ~ 400 • Graduate students: ~ 2000 (will establish a student chapter in Tsinghua University in coming April, about 50 members) Published papers in Chinese with the keyword “power electronics” Public accessible dissertations in Chinese with the keyword “power electronics” annually

Thoughts to increase benefits for the joint , industrial and student members • PELS would sign an official MOU with the societies, related to not only the membership, but also joint activities, coordination of technical meetings, publications, standards information, and others • PELS should recognizes them who have been recognized as senior members by the related societies, as PELS members, and then recommend them as senior members • Have a discount of membership fee for a group registration as joint, industry and student member • Provide more PELS information and publication, and translate them into native language
