About Me • PhD Student, Operations Management, ISQS • MBA (Business Statistics), Texas Tech University • MS (Industrial Eng.), University of Nebraska-Lincoln • BTech. (Mechanical Eng.), OUAT, India • Home country: India
Objective Of The Lab Portion • To give students an opportunity to experience operations management in situations that will mirror real life operational challenges. • Students will take a product idea and develop it from facility location planning for the product manufacture to addressing the challenges faced in everyday operations management. • Students will also learn to utilize quantitative operations management tools in a group setting in order to help build OM skills.
Learning Outcomes • Students who complete the course successfully will: • Integrate OM theory into a mock manufacturing project • Compare and contrast different business forecasting models • Propose different business strategies for different business environments • Create business proposals for potential investors • Present the business proposal to mock investors
Lab Outline • The class will be broken up into teams of 3 students for group work. Groups can be randomly assigned. • Three groups (one set) will present (15-20 minutes) one of two phases of the “birth and development from an operations management perspective” of their product during each lab session set aside for presentations. One group will be assigned to critique the presentation and will be graded on the critique. • Groups will be required to turn in a “project” paper (in two parts) detailing the material to be presented. • Each group will make two presentations : • Overall Plan (operations strategy, core competencies, mission statement, product design, process selection), and product demand forecasting • Capacity planning and location analysis, Just-In-Time system implementation, facility layout, work system design
Grading • Lecture: • 300 Three 100 point exams (3rd exam on Finals Day, non-comprehensive) • 100 Three Homework assignments (33 points each). • Lab: • 150 Two group presentations in the Lab class (75 points each) • 150 Two group projects in the Lab class (75 points each) • 40 Grade assigned to each group member by fellow members • 60 Attendance grade for Lab phase (attendance is mandatory) • 800 Total Possible Course Points • Each non-excused absence will result in a loss of 20 points up to a total of 60 out of the 800 points originally available. Leaving the lecture early without permission is automatically an unexcused absence. Attendance includes two mandatory office meetings with instructor (part 1 and 2).
Policies • Each group is required to meet with me prior to presenting their project to the class, twice during the semester. The entire group has to be present during this meeting. The meeting will take place in my office during office hours or by appointment. Missing this meeting will result in a 10 point loss of attendance (each visit). • Standards of academic honesty will be observed in accordance with TTU policy, as detailed in Operating Policy 34.12. Special accommodations to students with disabilities will be made, as detailed in Operating Policy 34.22. Student absences for the observance of religious holy days will be allowed, as detailed in Operating Policy 34.19. • For the presentation, if your group cannot present on the assigned day you can present at a later date for a penalty of 25 points. This must be pre-approved otherwise your group will get a “0” for the presentation.
Policies • Any student, who, because of a disability, may require special arrangements in order to meet the course requirements, should contact the instructor as soon as possible to make any necessary arrangements. • Students should present appropriate verification from Student Disability Services during the instructor’s office hours. • Please note instructors are not allowed to provide classroom accommodations to a student until appropriate verification from Student Disability Services has been provided. • For additional information, you may contact the Student Disability Services office in 335 West Hall or 806-742-2405.
Plagiarism • You are required to give your lab instructor an electronic copy of each power point presentation and each written presentation before a grade on your project can be issued. • All power point and written presentations are kept on file. If it is determined that you have turned in a presentation that is someone else’s work your grade for the assignment will be “0.” • It’s certainly acceptable for your team to develop a product that someone else has used, just not a copy of someone else’s work.
