  1. Useable Biomaterials in Dental Implants Stephen Sladen BME 281 Second Presentation

  2. Dental Implants • First known use by Maya civilization (600 AD). • 1952 – Dr. Leonard Linkow placed first implant. Known to be the father of modern implant dentistry. • 1959 – Stefano Melchiade Tramonte saw titanium screw could support prosthesis. Human trial results (1966). • Bone grafts required.

  3. Bone Grafting • Surgical procedure to replace damaged or unhealthy bone. • Patients suffering from periodontal disease. Dental implants needed. • Osteoconduction vs. Osteoinduction • Graft material sources • Autograft • Allograft • Biomaterials (Metal, Ceramic, Synthetic Polymers, etc.)

  4. Fast Response Biomaterial • Dr. Cameron Lutton - Inflammatory response polymer. • Healing process • Structure – attracts/repels proteins.

  5. Results • Lutton’s preliminary results were successful. • Presented to Orthopedic Research Society (2008). • Currently animal trials. (Limitation) • Begin treatment of patients with bone disease.

  6. Future Innovations • Titanium foam implants (Fraunhofer Institute for Manufacturing Technology and Advanced Materials Research). • Laser cut implants, degradable (Institute for Laser Technology). • Closer to biological joint replacement. • Bone grafts still remains a competitive market.
