  2. Chapter 6 Section 4: Han Dynasty Big Idea: The Han Dynasty created a new form of government that valued family, art, and learning.

  3. Han Dynasty (4th dynasty) • After the fall of the Qin dynasty, Liu Bang(peasant) led an army and won control. • Became 1st Han emperor • Lifted ban on books • Lowered taxes • Several years later (140BC) Emperor Wudi took the throne • Established Confucianism style rule • Began University to teach Confucian ideas • Set up Civil Service exam • Executed a law: If you disobey one’s parents it’s a crime • If obeyed parents, would obey Emperor

  4. Han contributions • Paper • Books • Porcelain • During Han period, became master ironworkers • Invented plow & wheelbarrow • Other Innovations • Sundial • Seismograph • Acupuncture

Han contacts other cultures • Mass produced Silk during this time • Traded silk cloth for horses with people in western China lands • Silk Road • 4,000 mile long network that stretched from East China to Mediterranean. • Traders did not travel entire length of road (only sections) • Traveled in Caravans • As the Han government became less stable Buddhism crept in & provided hope more than the traditional Chinese beliefs did. • Chinese embrace Buddhism (example of Diffusion)
