Agenda • Storage Management Vision in SBS 2008 • Server Backup • Storage Management Tools and Features • Questions
Storage Management Vision • SBS 2008 aims to provide a comprehensive data protection from disasters (fire or theft), system failures (disk crash), or data losses (virus attacks, fat finger deletes) • Storage management features such as Move Data Folders, Quota Management, Shared Folder Management provide users with simple tools to manage storage and data • Prevention better than the cure • Goal is to be prescriptive by providing data protection best practices and tools that aid it
Server Backup • Windows Server Backup (WSB) is a robust new data protection utility that replaces Windows NT Backup • WSB has been rebuilt from ground up with a goal of solving the backup needs of Small Business Customers. Focus is on Simplicity, Reliability and Performance • Summary • Simplified management and configuration through SBS 2008 administration console • Greatly enhanced performance with low server footprint. This allows multiple daily and incremental backups for more restore points • System Recovery functionality – complete solution for disaster recovery • Bare Metal Restore to similar or different hardware • Typical recovery times are ~30 minutes • Application Data Recovery support • Windows SharePoint Services, Exchange, and SQL • System State Backup and Recovery • Command line only • Supports rotational schema for backups between multiple disks • Does not support tape media
Using Backup Configuration Wizard To Restore The Server Demo
Move Data Folders • Allows moving server data stores • Exchange • SharePoint • WSUS repository (for Windows updates) • User Shares • Folder Redirection target • Focus on Robustness and Simplicity • Wizard allows data to be moved only to internal drives • Validates data and application for move • Move tasks are transactional • Resets to original configuration if task fails • Move data is scriptable • Uses PowerShellCommandlets • Get information about application data using • > Get-SBSDataStore Exchange • Move application data to a new drive using • > Move-SBSDataStore Exchange D:\
Other Tools • Shared folder management • Create and manage shared folders on server • View and monitor status of shared folders on server • Folder Redirection • Allows administrator to set Folder Redirection for specific users or groups • Allows redirection of specific folders on client machines • Quota management • Uses File Server Resource Manager from Windows Server 2008 • Provides alerts and threshold notifications
Server Configuration • Server Storage Configuration • App/user data should be placed separately from OS/critical volumes • Separate your application binaries from data • Backup size for enabling System Recovery and System State Protection is reduced • In case of disk failure, you have isolated the system from data • If data volume fails, OS is available to aid in volume/app recovery • If OS volume fails, a System Recovery only without repartitioning disks will get server up without data loss or roll back • Data with high I/O should be placed in separate disk spindles to improve performance • Backup Disk Configuration • Backup disk should be at least 1.5 times the combined storage capacity of the volumes included in the backup • Create recovery disk and keep offsite for DR scenarios • Offsite storage and periodic rotation of backup disks • Backup multiple times a day ensures more restore points • Storing backups offsite ensures recovery from disaster • Periodic rotations ensures more recent copies stored offsite

Server Restore • Using native Windows Backup • From GUI or WBADMIN • Restore individual files or folders • Restore application data • No granularity provided • Exchange will restore all Exchange storage groups • Same for SQL and Sharepoint • Bare Metal Restore booting from DVD • Manual restore using wbadmin from WinRE
System State • No GUI option • System State is part of the critical volume backup, too • To create one • Wbadmin start systemstatebackup • To restore one • Wbadmin start systemstaterecovery • Much bigger than in 2003
Server Storage • Free disk space check • Shared folder management • Quota management through FSRM • Storage tasks • Move Exchange Server Data • Move Windows SharePoint Services Data • Only the MDF • Move users’ shared data • Move users’ redirected documents data • Move Windows Update repository • All moves are transactional • Move Data wizards are available as PowerShell CMDLETS • OEM and VAP • Runnable post-setup through a setup hook
