ACCOMPLISHMENTS OF LOUIS • Louis’s main achievements were expanding the effectiveness of the central government, POLITICAL • increasing the boundaries of France to the north and east, ECONOMIC • placing one of his grandsons on the throne of Spain. SOCIAL • He is known, too, for building the Palace at Versailles into one of the largest in the world. UNIQUE • But these successes cost the nation dearly. The economy suffered during the long years of war, taxes increased, and the countryside was left vulnerable to punishing famines. ECNOMIC

  6. Born on September 5, 1638, in Saint-Germain-en-Laye, France, King Louis XIV succeeded his father on May 14, 1643, at the age of four years and eight months. Known as the 'Sun King,' he wanted France to be powerful, prosperous, and magnificent but was not overly concerned with the well-being of his people. He is known, too, for building the Palace at Versailles into one of the largest in the world.
