www.nwleics.gov.uk My Leadership Approach • Leadership • Leadership with management • Coaching leadership
www.nwleics.gov.uk Journey • Management – 1981 – 1990 • Management – Leadership 1990-1999 • Leadership 1999 – date • With Management • Leadership • Coaching / Leadership
www.nwleics.gov.uk Case Study2012 • Strategic Partnership Board • Performance Sub Group • Highly skilled & intense • Police, County, City, Probation, CPS • How to tackle that?
www.nwleics.gov.uk Case Study2012 • PARO • January 2012 • Police Force Area • November Event
www.nwleics.gov.uk What did the election feel like? • A bit of a musical performance • Composers – Home Office and Electoral Commission • Performing singers and promoters – PAROS as the only act on the bill • Support bands/orchestras - LROs
Composers • Composing something quite different to before • Have changed the date of the event • Given some outline of the “musical score” without the full detail • Expect the final performance to be perfect • Will take legal action if it is not
PARO role • To understand and “guess” what the musical score is rather than wait. • To treat all LROs and election staff as equals • First meeting 14th February 2012
“One Team” • Meet regularly • Joint decisions – one team • Signed undertaking to mitigate risks • Bespoke joint training sessions • Regular dialogue and discussion • Joint protocols • Shared time to think and prepare
www.nwleics.gov.uk Local Planning and Preparation • Project plans and risk assessments – drawn up early and revisited regularly • Weekly Project Team meetings • Monthly attendance at Election Officer meetings • Monthly updates to District Chief Executive meetings • Updates to other LROs as required • Monthly updates to Police Strategic Transition Board meetings • Home Office seminars
Lessons learned from the performance: Directions – less is more Be flexible –what works for one, may not work for another Acknowledge local issues Experience – there is a lot of it out there. Don’t be afraid to ask Enjoy, celebrate successes Focus on what you know www.nwleics.gov.uk
PAROs “faced the music” in November • Final election announcement on 16th November • Performance will end “when the fat lady sings”
WHAT ARE YOUR THOUGHTS? WHAT QUESTIONS WOULD YOU WISH TO ASK ME?
“NOT WHAT THEY DO, IT’S ABOUT WHY THEY DO IT” • Understanding drivers • Behaviour • Values • Patterns of behaviour • Profile – not a competition
MANAGING “SELF” • Impact on “logical levels” • Its rarely personal • E + R = O • “All done with positive intent” • Match, Pace, Lead
SURVIVAL • Judgement – own plus others • Awareness of self • Information/knowledge be interested • Political antennae • Know when to leave alone, • know when to stand your ground • Coaching brings success
