Purpose of DAC Involve parents in advising the Board, Administration, and SSCs concerning the review, planning and accountability of Economic Impact Aid/State Compensatory Education programs and Title I.
Parent/Community Involvement “When parents, teachers, students and others view one another as partners in education, a caring community forms around students and begins its work.” Dr. Joyce Epstein
Parent/Community Involvement • The California Legislature believes that the individuals who are most affected (stakeholders) by the operation on a school/district should have a major role in the decisions regarding how a school/district functions.
Parent/Community Involvement SCUSD 2010-2014 Strategic Plan Pillar II • Develop meaningful opportunities that empower parents to participate in their children’s learning. • Ensure that every school will become an integral hub of community life to provide open space and access to resources. • Increase strategic partnerships that expose students to career pathways through internships and service learning.
Family & Community Engagement (FACE) Parent Resource And Training: • Develops school-site Parent Resource Centers • Supports SCUSD Parent Advisory groups • Develops support/ partner relationships with Community Agencies and Organizations. • Offers trainings and workshops for SCUSD parents.
Parent Resource Centers Successful Parent Resource Centers: • Give families a sense of ownership by including them as stakeholders in the program and space design. • Serve as a setting for families, school staff and community members to develop positive relationships. • Are identified within the community as a site for training, workshops and activities that help students and their families succeed academically socially and emotionally.
Parent Workshops & Trainings SCUSD Parent Trainings • Ensure that all families have a complete understanding of their school system and reporting; state standards and student assessment and parent rights. • Provide programs that affirm and strengthen families’ cultural, racial and linguistic identities and enhance their ability to function in a multi-cultural society. • Provide programs by school/district staff and community partners that support parent/school/community integration. • Encourage the development of parent leaders and advocates to partner with school sites and the District on advisory/ decision making groups.
Who is DAC? DAC is comprised of
What is EIA/SCE • EIA/SCE is support for educationally disadvantaged students (NSLP + EDY) • School site funds to support programs and activities to improve academic achievement • EIA/LEP is to support programs and activities for EL students (DELAC oversight) • Used to supplement Title I funds
Executive Board Members Officers elected for two years as: • President • Vice President of Membership • Vice President of Family Engagement • Secretary
Understanding of ESEA/NCLB DAC members will receive training from State and Federal Programs on: • No Child Left Behind (NCLB) • Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) • School Program Improvement (PI) • School Development/Improvement Plan (SDIP) • Consolidated Application components
Increased Parent Engagement DAC meetings will: • Feature district programs and services • Provide opportunities for parents to provide feedback, input and suggestions • Disseminate information to district parents • Report to Superintendent and Board of Trustees, annually or more often
