FOLKLORE • Stories of folk cultures cannot be traced to one single person • Such tales were initially spread by word of mouth, and each reteller left a faint impression on the the tale by crafting the story anew to fit the audience and the setting • Many tales were changed even further when they were finally written
Why did people begin telling folk literature? FOUR BASICS NEEDS: • The need to explain the natural world • The need to articulate fears and dreams, thus making them accessible and manageable • The need to impose some order on the apparent random, chaotic, nature of life, thus helping us to understand our place in the universe • The need to entertain
