Who we are ISU is an independent, democratic, non-profit, non-partisan organization run for and by international students We are committed to the social, academic and political interests of ALL international students studying in Norway Our organization was formed in the late 1970s, thanks to a small group of student activists and their efforts to protect the welfare and academic situation of international students in Norway Our national office is in Oslo and we have about 27 local branches, all over Norway
Action plan 2018/2019 Free Norwegian language accredited classes for international students as part of their study in Norway Allocate time in our Leadership Meetings to career development workshops for international student leaders Regional cooperation among local branches An affordable visa fee with better terms for students, such as the visa lasting for the duration of your study Improve the overall immigration process for international students Work with stakeholders on supporting education of refugees
Our Partners NSO is the National Union of Students in Norway, the largest organisation for students in Norway. Politically independent and an important voice for the students in Norway, they work with politicians, administrative officials and the State Educational Loan Fund. Our closest partner Cooperation for Internationalisation Campaign partners LNU is the Norwegian Children and Youth Council, an umbrella organisation that is democratic and represents a vast diversity of activities and interests. They provide funding for ISU and advise on political matters. Extra funding for projects ISU Stories, RCGs, Media Campaign ESN is the Erasmus Student Network, the biggest student association in Europe. They work for the creation of a more mobile and flexible education environment.
Our Partners Spire is a youth organisation working for a just and sustainable distribution of the world’s resources. SAIH is the solidarity organisation of students and academics in Norway. Their motto is “education for liberation” ANSA is the organisation for Norwegian students abroad. They safeguard their interests and inform them about study opportunities abroad LNU is the Norwegian Children and Youth .Council, an umbrella organisation that is democratic and represents a vast diversity of activities and interests. They provide funding for ISU and advise on political matters. ESN is the Erasmus Student Network, the biggest student association in Europe. They work for the creation of a more mobile and flexible education environment.
Annual Meetings • Leadership Meeting (Autumn) One delegate, normally the new leader of the branch, attends this meeting to discuss current issues, learn about ISU, and the Action Plan. Workshops on how to be a good leader, how to report finances and other useful seminars occur. • Leadership Meeting (Spring) In the second leadership meeting, the progress of the work that has been done since the new board started. It’s also a great opportunity to strengthen our relationship with our partners by inviting them to speak at the meeting. • National Assembly The highest decision-making body of ISU, responsible for the implementation and monitoring of the political platform, the action plan, and the approval of the annual financial report. It’s normally chaired by a person with no active stake in ISU.
National Board Duties • Calls for a National Assembly each academic year, after two Leadership Meetings have occurred • Elected by the National Assembly to be its representative • Meets at least five times a year • Review and approve ISU Norway’s accounting and revised budget four times a year • Made up of 7 members
Chairman Name: Michael Agbamoro Responsible for chairing all NB meetings Calling for NB meetings Creating the agenda for the meetings Ensuring all NB members have tasks assigned and followed through An engineer and energy enthusiast with over six years of industry experience, from manufacturing to risk management to the oil and gas sector Past president of ISU Telemark
Vice-Chair Name: Lindah ChidoMatsapa Assist Chairman and Political Auditor Calling for NB meetings Fills in the absence of the Chairman and assume all responsibilities A Zimbabwean studying Biology at Nord University, she is passionate about the independence of young women across the world. Her journey started with the Zimbabwe National Students Union. She is now a part of the StAR program.
Treasurer Name: Rayan El-zibawi Works closely with the OC Creates updates on the budget Projected costs and budget cuts are her jam From Egypt. Lived in Norway for the past 7 years and studies finances at BI Oslo. She’ll continue on with a master’s degree in Audit and Accounting, probably at Nord University in Bodo. She was first the treasurer at her Local Branch and moved to being treasurer at the National Board. She loves that ISU allows her to see experiences and issues from many different perspectives.
Political Auditor Name: Muhammad Saeed Akram Ensures all committees and boards at a local and national level are adhering to constitutional principles Gets consulted when there are confusing/unclear constitutional sections Studies Electrical Engineering at UiTNarvik. During his student life in Pakistan, he took part in many welfare student organizations. His ISU journey has been amazing and he looks forward to contribute more and more
Political Affairs Officer Name: Almim Hossain Shuvo Manages social media with the help of the NP Responsible for Press Releases Leads information campaigns Brings issues regarding housing and academic welfare to the NB Travelling is his passion. Has an interest in political arenas of different countries. Studies Maritime Management.
Union Development Officer Name: Samuel (Sam) Davis Supports the NP work In charge of ISU Norway’s Fundraising Maintains regular communication with LBs and acts as the link between LBs and NB Leads the work of RCGs Sam likes funky music *cue “Play that funky music”… He stays active with sports and enjoys podcasts. Currently an Intern at the Norwegian Refugee Council
National President Name: Jose de Pool The handsome face of ISU Norway, internally and externally Represent ISU in partner and governmental meetings Represent the Executive Board and work with OC Project manager for ISU Stories A biologist with an interest in Cancer Research and Tissue Engineering. Ran away from Venezuela. Acted as Secretary and later President in ISU Bodo. All about Internationalisation and moving my hips
Organisation Consultant Name: Rikke Andersen Works full-time for ISU Norway Daily Administration Point of contact with LNU Connective connections Danish but loves Norway more. Business Administration (Bachelor’s), Innovation and Business Development (Master’s). Previous NP of ISU. Wants to bring ISU higher in cooperation with the EB and NB.
Our local branches • Every ISU Local Branch has a president, responsible for its operation • They report on their activities at the National Assembly and Leadership Meetings • Create an environment where international students can contribute and fulfil their educational, political and social potential • ISU Local Branches can promote their cases to the ISU National Assembly. Case papers should be sent three weeks before the NA • They are to be run in a democratic manner • They must hold fair and open elections and operating according to the National Constitution, the local constitution and the fundamental principles of the organization • Local Branch boards have the right to ask the EB questions which must be answered no later than three weeks
