  2. LinkOut is a feature that adds a library-specific icon to PubMed citations. • This icon will link to: - the library’s online full-text subscriptions - local print holdings information - OpenURL-based service (link resolver)

  3. LinkOut offers three services: • LinkOut (via Submission Utility) • Outside Tool (requires a link resolver) • LinkOut Local (requires a link resolver)

  4. LinkOut (via Submission Utility) • Specify holdings information • Two ways to submit holdings information • Enter holdings into Submission Utility • Vendor (i.e. , EBSCO, Serials Solutions, ProQuest, etc.) can supply holdings information on behalf of library; holdings do not appear in the Submission Utility • The ?holding= parameter added to the PubMed URL triggers the library icon to appear on PubMed citations that correspond to the holdings information that has been supplied to LinkOut • URL to activate the library icon in PubMed: http://www/ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed?holding=NameAbbr

  5. Linkout (via Submission Utility) Steps to activate your icon in PubMed: http://www.nlm.nih.gov/bsd/disted/linkout_for_libraries/using_linkout.html#missingicon

  6. Outside Tool (Otool) • No holdings information is required • The ?otool= parameter causes the library’s OpenURL/link resolver icon to appear on every citation in PubMed • These icons go to a landing page where users can do at least one of the following:- Click a link to the full-text article via the library’s online subscriptions- Click a link to the library’s catalog to find the printed article- Submit an ILL request • URL to activate the Otool icon in PubMed: http://www/ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed?otool=NameAbbr

  7. Outside Tool (Otool) • Steps to activate your Otool icon in PubMed: • Go to: http://www/ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed?otool=NameAbbr • Perform a search (i.e. cancer) • Select Abstract from the Display Settings menu and click Apply • You should see your icons

  8. LinkOut Local • Specify library holdings via XML files submitted to a NLM FTP site in lieu of the Submission Utility • The ?holding= parameter triggers the library icon to appear on PubMed citations that correspond to the holdings information that has been submitted in the XML file • URL to activate the library icon in PubMed:http://www/ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed?holding=NameAbbr • Steps to activate your icon in PubMed • Follow the same steps for LinkOut (via Submission Utility)
