CHENNAI:About30%ofthoseengagedinthefoodindustrywereunwareof theFoodSafetyandStandardsAct(FSSA)2006thatcameintoforceinAugust 2011.TheActlaysdownlawsgoverningthemanufacture,storage, distributionandsaleoffooditemstomakethemsafeandwholesomefor consumption. Knowmoreaboutfssailicenseconsultantandfssaionlineregistration Thisstartlingfactwasthrownupbyastudyconductedamong700peoplelast yearbytheConfederationofIndianFoodTradeandIndustry(CIFTI)and FederationofIndianChambersofCommerceandIndustry(FICCI).Thereisa needtospreadawarenessabouttheFSSA,expertsataconferenceonfood safetystandardsconductedbytheConfederationofIndianIndustryhereon Wednesdaysaid. "Theindustryisstillnotconfidentaboutthelawandthereisaneedtoeducate thegovernmentandtheconsumers,"saidBThiagarajan,chairman, AgricultureandFoodProcessingTaskForce,CII.TheFSSAreplacesvarious centralActsandtargetrisksinfoodsafetyandquality.Thestudyalsofound that75%oftherespondentswhoknewabouttheActfelttherewasaneedfor harmonizationoffoodregulationsinthecountrywithinternationally acceptedstandards."Foodsafetyisamajorconcern,especiallywhenweare exportingfood,"saidJaganMohanG,businessheadatGallaFoods. "Sometimes,processedfoodmaybesavedforuptothreetofouryears.We needtomakesurethatitissafeforconsumers,"hesaid.
