Presentation New EU Directive initiates development of new Magnetic Field Meter Åke Amundin 2012-09-10
Congratulationto the 150 yearsanniverery • Riga Technical University was founded 14th of October 1862. • RTU is the oldest technical university in the Baltic states. • For Combinova it is an honour to participate in the celebration.
Agenda • Short presentation of myself and Combinova • Some background and the R&D mission • Development steps • Hardware • Firmware • PC Software • The resulting specification
Åke Amundin • Management positions from Swedish companies as Electrolux AB and Incentive AB. • Oneof the mainownersof Combinova for nearly 10 yearsand Managing Director for last 4 years.
History • Combinova was founded 1981 • 1987 the first instrument for measuring magnetic fields was introduced. • The instruments were designed to verify exposure limits due to MPR II and the newly introduced TCO-label for CRT-displays. • 2006 Combinova became exclusive distributor in Sweden for Chroma ATE Inc, Taiwan. • 2012 the distributorship was extended to also include Latvia.
Chroma Product Range Programmable AC- and DC-sources Automatic Test Systems Electric Safety Test Equipment Electronic Loads
Chroma Test Applications • Power Supply Testing • Battery Testing – both battery cells and battery packs • Solar Array Simulations • Test of Inverters • PLD Testing • Test of LED-drivers
Our Partner in Latvia • BALTIC & SCAN-TECH
Why all concern for EMF? • Electromagnetic fields can have an adverse health effect on human bodies. • At lower frequencies (<100 kHz) induced current can cause interference with nerve system. • At higher frequencies human tissue can get heated up • EU is working on a directive to limit workers exposure for EMF. • This initiated our decision to develop a new advanced magnetic field meter.
The EU-directivewillhaveimplicationsinternationally Manufacturers of Induction heating equipment, Welding equipment Household appliances Electric and Hybrid vehicle manufacturer Electric industrial ovens Etc. has to consider the EMF fields around their products.
The R&D Mission • An auto ranging dynamic range from 10 nT to 10 mT • A frequency range from 5 Hz to 400 kHz • A built in spectrum analyzer • Evaluation to frequency dependent exposure limits like ICNIRP • Peak detection in time domain • Logging with spectrum • Presentation of spectrum and measurement data on a graphical display • PC interface
Hardware Design • A loop sensor with three orthogonal loops was described in early standards The area of each loop should be 100 cm2. • A fast DSP to take care of all calculations • A host processor to take care of communication via USB 2, man – machine interface and administration and storage of data. • Litiumion battery for 12 hours operation

MFM 3000Software • Features: • Import logged data • Remote control • Time Graph • FFT Graph • Harmonics Graph • Band Pass/Stop • Easy to implement new languages • Evaluation to ICNIRP limits etc • Export to Excel, Word and txt-files • T, A/m or Gauss
Some reflections on the R&D process • Hardware design was accomplished according to plan • Firmware design was heavily delayed and did cost much more than budgeted • Software development is a never ending story
Opportunity for demonstration MFM 3000 and the PC-software will be available for demonstration
