Bond Polarity • The sharing of electron between atoms. Ex: Nonpolar and polar convent -A nonpolar covalent bond is when the electrons are shared equally between the atoms. These are most commonly linear molecules. ex: N-N -A polar covalent bond is when the electrons are shared unequally. ex: HF
Electronegativity • The ability of an atom to gain or steal an electron. Fluorine is the most electronegative. (F= 4.0 compared to Cs= .7) • Electron Affinity-is the measure of how strongly an atom will attract an additional electron. • Ionization Energy- is the measure of how well an atom can hold on to it’s electrons.
Dipole Moments • Dipole- the distance between two electrical charges of equal magnitude with opposite signs • Dipole moment- the measure of a dipole. • Diploes are measured in debyes (D) - 3.34 X 10^-30 coulombs – meters
