  1. Issue: Competency of Spiritual Care in Nursing By Tom Cole Research Question Spiritual care is recognized as a fundamental aspect of nursing care. How can competency in this element of care be improved? • Research Approach • A qualitative study using a survey of oncology nurses in a hospital setting. • Responses would provide insight into how education on spiritual care could be most effective. • Need for Research • Majority of nurses agree that spiritual care is a fundamental aspect of nursing • Studies show a lack of education and competence in providing spiritual care (McSherry & Jamieson, 2011). • Relevance to Nursing • Studies indicate that spiritual distress is common among patients with advanced cancer (Peteet & Balboni, 2013). • Studies further suggest that providing spiritual care improves the physical comfort of patients, decreases pain and anxiety, and improves communication (Wong & Yau, 2010). • Limitations/Problems • Nurses biases/beliefs • Spirituality is subjective • Small sample population References McSherry, W., & Jamieso, S.
