RAW Capacity system Usable Storage empty Written Data data What is “data”? • Storage Capacity: In any customer environment, storage capacity can be classified into 3-broad categories: • RAW (or Procured) Capacity: This is the total storage capacity of all the storage devices in the customer’s environment • Usable Storage: Usable (also referred to as Allocated on the mainframe) is defined as follows: Subset of Raw Capacity that can have data written to it for productive use. Usable Storage is raw capacity less capacity that cannot be written to but that, nonetheless, consumes disk capacity. Examples of non-productive capacity: operating/file systems, journaling, parity, RAID, mirroring, formatting, and spare drives • Written Data:The sub-set of Usable Storage that has data written to it

Some volumes may be under-utilized, yet the space allocated to them is unavailable for use by other applications. Free space is pooled and available to any volume/application that requires it, this yields higher disk utilization and drives cost savings as less physical disk is needed to satisfy business demands.
