CANDU X Main Safety Feature • Separation between moderator and coolant. • Replace pumped moderator cooling loop with passive loop. • Passive loop can be used under normal and accident conditions. • Key projects: • High Efficiency Channel (HEC) with internal insulation. • Flashing-driven moderator cooling loop.
High Efficiency Channel (HEC) is key technology for CANDU X. • Internal insulation (eliminates CT and annulus gas system). • Allows the use of passive moderator cooling under normal and upset conditions. • Potential “walk-away” safety when combined with Passive moderator cooling. Fuel channel ceramic insulator tests ongoing at SC conditions. • Feasibility study to add natural circulation loop completed.
Test loop designed and materials purchased. • Will be used to study scaling and allow the design of a prototype loop for CX.
