5nm. Nickel-rich and titanium-rich lamella structures with spacing of 10 – 70 nm were obtained by milling Ni and Ti powders in a liquid-nitrogen-filled Attritor mill. Crystallite sizes within both nickel-rich and titanium-rich phase of as-milled powders are between 4 and 10 nm.

  1. 5nm • Nickel-rich and titanium-rich lamella structures with spacing of 10 – 70 nm were obtained by milling Ni and Ti powders in a liquid-nitrogen-filled Attritor mill. • Crystallite sizes within both nickel-rich and titanium-rich phase of as-milled powders are between 4 and 10 nm. • Annealing at 350o C for 10 hours gives close to 100% amorphous. • Hardness increases as amorphous forms. • HIPing of as-milled powders is being performed at temperatures up to 350o C. 2. Broader Impact Two graduate students are involved with research under this grant. One will get his masters this semester. One underrepresented minority undergraduate student worked on this project during the summer; I am currently supervising the senior project of a group of four students, who are extending this work to studying the surface treatment of metallic implants; this came about after presenting my work to the junior class last year. XRD of milled Ti-Ni , and annealed at 300oC, 320oC, and 350 for 10h. Hardness test results for isothermal annealing at various times
