Current InternationalProgram Features • IB course in the UG core and IB major • JU home base for Study Abroad Programs • “Davis Barcelona” program next summer – UG business courses plus language immersion, open to other schools • Heavy global emphasis at MBA and EMBA levels (courses, simulations, international trip) • Extensively traveled and global work-experienced faculty • Limited number of international alliances/partnerships – ESB-Frankfurt, Finance Academy-Moscow, Kadir Has-Istanbul; Brazil & China pending • No Title VI-B grant in its history
Major Community Global Initiatives • Major naval presence – Mayport; Brunswick, GA • Third largest port on East Coast of US – autos, cruise, container (Hanjin, Mitsui/Traypac, Crowley, Trailer Bridge, Sea Star); preparing for Panamax ships • HQ for CSX – intermodal capabilities • Cecil Field – only public access horizontal space port on East Coast, major international companies co-located (Embraer, Boeing) • BRIC country outreach initiatives through the JAX Chamber (2nd largest in US) • Huge global financial services presence (Deutsche Bank, B of A/Merrill, Citi) • Medical tourism – Mayo Clinic • Growing direct foreign investment
Prerequisites forGlobal Program Success • Location counts! • A supportive university context -- President/Provost, competent International Programs Office with appropriate experience, early & multiple global experience opportunities • Critical mass of “true believers” across disciplines, with identified shared core competencies (e.g., logistics/supply chain) • Carefully managed, limited number of strategic alliances/partnerships • International business community engagement & alignment – “share their dreams” • Very active utilization of AACSB resources, PRME (UN Global Compact), and other NGO relationships • A theme that has distinctive meaning and sticking power – e.g., sustainability – that you can build around and has global relevance/context
