Worcestershire Health LibrariesSome definitions • Bibliotheraphy “The guided use of reading, always with a therapeutic outcome in mind” (Katz & Watt 1992) • Information Prescriptions Information prescriptions aim to provide people with long term conditions with timely, relevant and reliable information to empower them to make decisions about the care and services they receive. (Your health, your way. DH, 2009) • Books on Prescription Books on prescription involves partnership working between clinicians and librarians where a clinician offers a prescription to a patient who then uses the public library to borrow the prescription (usually a book).

Worcestershire Health LibrariesBOPIT • Team members: Health Librarian (Chair); NHS Worcestershire (Minute Taker); Public Librarian; Public Health Consultant; Psychologist; Primary Care Counsellor; plus ad hoc invited attendees. • Strategy agreed: Countywide, funding for 3 year business plan, phased approach to delivery and consistent & branded messaging. • Implementation: • £100,000 funding obtained from PCT, Mental Health Trust and County Council (including staff time) 2008-2011. • First booklist on mental health drawn up by clinicians and books purchased by County Library. • Kit consisting of booklist, leaflets and paper prescription pads distributed to GPs, psychologists, counsellors. • Piloted in Redditch autumn 2007, then rolled out Countywide with books in 21 branch libraries, 4 mobiles & library at home.

Journal of Psychiatric and Mental Health Nursing, 2008, 15, 24-36.) • West Midland Conference facilitated by Worcestershire Health Libraries, Alexandra Hospital, Redditch 2007 • Steering Group for Worcestershire formed – PCT (Public Health), Mental Health Trust, Public and Health Libraries. • Books on Prescription Implementation Team (BOPIT) with representatives from above organisations

Worcestershire Health LibrariesBOPIT • Evaluation : • Scheme supported by most GP practices in County • 5571 issues in year 1 and 10,877 in year 2 • 568 prescriptions received • Readers bookmarks indicate 86% would use the scheme again • Each book scored for helpfulness • Next steps : • Pilot for Children & Young People Mental Health Service • Worcestershire Pain Management Group • Prison service • Other formats – eg audio, simple language
