The Beginning 1902 - ”Tree Trunk” method was first form of speed enforcement. 1940’s - “Pacing” method was used. 1950’s - Introduction of police radar. Present - Photo-radar technology (Automated Enforcement)
What is Automated Enforcement? • ITE definition - “Automated Enforcement is the use of image capture technology to monitor and enforce traffic control laws, regulations, or restrictions. Where enabling legislation authorizes the use of automated enforcement, the image capture technology negates the need for a police officer to directly witness an offense.”
How The Process Works • Time, date, and speed are recorded. • Photos reviewed by police officers or other law officials. • Tickets are mailed only if there is clear evidence that the vehicle was in violation of the law.
Statistic For Running Red Lights • Red light running factors into more than 800 deaths annually • More than 200,000 injuries in crashes • During 1992-98 fatal crashes have increased 18 percent
