  1. Life (and Death) Before Seat Belts

    Section 4
  2. Investigate What happened to the car as it went down the ramp? What would a graph of this look like?
  3. Graphing Motion
  4. Graphing Motion Acceleration – the change in velocity with respect to a change in time; “how fast the velocity changes; a = Δv/Δt; unit: m/s/s What does velocity mean? Vector – a quantity that has both magnitude and direction Scalar – a quantity that has magnitude (size/amount), but no direction
  5. Changes in Velocity Speed up (increase in speed) Slow down (decrease in speed) Turn (change the direction of the velocity) What is happening in each of these situations?
  6. Investigate What happened to the dummy when the car hit the wall? Why?
  7. Investigate
  8. Physics Talk Newton’s First Law of Motion – an object at rest stays at rest and an object in motion stays in motion unless acted upon by an unbalanced, external force Inertia – the natural tendency of an object to remain at rest or to remain moving with constant speed in a straight line
  9. Physics Talk Breaking down Newton’s First Law Rest Motion External Force
  10. For You to Read Three Collisions First Collision: Vehicle and external object Second Collision: Person and vehicle Third Collision: Organs and person
  11. What Do You Think Now? Why should all passengers wear seat belts? Seat Belt Laws in Georgia since September 1, 1988
