The Beginning • Edgar Allan Poe was born on January 19th 1809 to Elizabeth and David Poe • Poe was born in Boston during the time Thomas Jefferson was President • Poe’s mother soon left his father and took Edgar and his two siblings with her • When Edgar was two his mother died
The Darkness Begins • The War of 1812 begins • Poe experienced his parent’s divorce and his mother’s death at an early age possibly starting his dark influence • In the wake of his mother’s death Poe is separated from his siblings and sent to live with the Allan family
1826:Enlists in UVA 1826:Develops a drinking problem 1815: Goes to boarding school in England for 5 years 1826: Begins to struggle financially and his wealthy foster parents offer little help 1826:Drops out of UVA and is soon in debt and struggling to survive
Poe soon joins the army and quickly attains the rank • of Sergeant Major • After one year in the military his foster mother dies • spurring Mr. Allan into a period of compassion and • he helps Edgar get into West Point • Shortly after Mr. Allan’s financial support stops again • leading Edgar to disobey direct orders to get expelled
Early Works • In 1827 “Tamerlane and other Poems” is published • This collection of poems was only 40 pages and received no notable recognition at the time
Trying to survive • After struggling to make any money off his early poems Poe turns to prose • Spends time working for literary journals and periodicals • Gets a few stories in a Philadelphia magazine, and also wins an award for the short story “Ms. Found in a Bottle”
Poe finds Love • In 1835(age of 26) Edgar marries his 13 year old cousin • Poe moves to Richmond and works at the Southern Literary Messenger for two years • Despite hugely growing the paper Poe was not making enough money and left the paper to move to NY in 1837
Poe find his niche • In 1838 Poe moves to Philadelphia and began writing poems and short stories • In 1839 "Tales of the Grotesque and Arabesque“ is published • Poe then goes to work for Graham’s Magazine and grows circulation 5,000 to 35,000 in 2 years and then leaves to start his own magazine
Once again unemployed • Upon leaving Grahams Poe announces his intention to start his own magazine The Stylus • Poe is never succesful in starting the magazine • In the next few years he writes “The Gold Bug” and “The Raven” • Both of these sell well, but still make barely enough for Poe’s family to survive • In 1847 Virginia dies from tuberculosis
