BRING COMPASS TOMORROW Warm-up- silently please pg. 147: 3, 6, 8 THINK about the basics from yesterday duplicating segments and angles finished? do pyramid puzzle on page 148
Objective Students will learn construction methods to create perpendiculars. Students will take notes, complete an investigation and participate in whole class discussion.
Homework due today FREE TICKET DAY You may turn in any ONE missing homework due from October 10 – 24 for full credit Homework due next class NONE- enjoy fall break pg. 107 revisions due Nov. 2
section 3.2- Constructions Page 149 Constructing perpendicular bisectors Perpendicular bisector: a line or segment that bisects a segment and is also perpendicular to the segment bisector– divides a segment into two equal parts - a point that is equidistant from the endpoints
perpendicular bisectors See page 149 Investigation 1: with patty paper Investigation 2: with a compass and straightedge Perpendicular Bisector Conjecture: If a point is on the perpendicular bisector of a segment, then it is EQUIDISTANT from the endpoints Note that constructing the perpendicular bisector also locates the midpoint of a segment.
Section 3.3– constructing perpendiculars to a line what is the distance from you to the nearest wall? How will you measure it? Does the angle with the wall matter? In geometry, “distance from a point to a line” means the perpendicular distance.
perpendiculars and angle bisectors do investigations 1 and 2 on page 154 – 155 In the 2nd investigation, is M the midpoint of segment AB? Does it need to be? HOW DO THE TWO METHODS DIFFER? do investigations 1 and 2 on page 159 and 160 do all steps- be ready to present in 15 minutes
vocabulary median- the segment connecting the vertex of a triangle to the midpoint of its opposite side Draw a large acute triangle and construct a median. median
midsegment- the segment that connects the midpoints of two sides of a triangle Draw a large acute triangle and construct a midsegment. midsegment
Debrief- EQ what did you learn today? What was easy for you? What did you like? What was difficult? Is there something I could do to help you?
