  1. Holyoak, K.J., Junn, E.N., & Billman, D.O. (1984). Development of Analogical Problem-Solving Skill. Child Development, 55(6), 2042-2055 . THEORY AND METHODS STRENGTHS AND WEAKNESSES FINDINGS AND GRAPHIC • Analogical reasoning is “a hallmark of human intelligence.” In a story transfer situation, how do children deal with analogical reasoning? • Methods: 4-6 yr olds, 10-12 yr olds. Had to figure out how to move the balls from one bowl to another. Could use various tools including walking stick, hollow cardboard tube, flat paper, distracters. Preceded by analogous problem story – genie with a magic staff, genie with a magic carpet. • Strengths • Checked that subjects remembered and understood the stories. • Used hints to seek success rather than just recording failure • Important follow-up experiments • Weaknesses • Smallish sample • No mention of background of subjects Egocentric speech Communicative speech thought PIAGET Jessica Tsang | ED368 Cognitive Development | 4.08.2009
