  3. University Update Entrance Requirements U of M Criteria 1.One credit of Grade 12 S or U English with a minimum grade of 60% . and 2. A minimum average of 70% over three Grade 12 S. NB:less than 70% average will limit the students ability to access certain courses as well as limit the student to 24 credit hours in their first year Direct Entry 85% no less than 60% over 3 specified courses

Out of Province University Entrance Requirements • University entrance requirements vary from university to university • Check the entrance requirements for these universities using the internet. • Speak to your counsellor if you need to make a course change • Students have encountered problems for NOT checking out the out of province requirements

Deadline Dates • December 1 Advanced Early Entrance Applications:University of Manitoba & Winnipeg (qualifies students for Advanced Early Admissions Scholarships with completion of applications) http://www.umanitoba.ca/student/admissions http://www.uwinnipeg.ca/index/future-admis-status • Out Of Province Applications Dates vary so students need to access details for each post-secondary institution applied to. Ontario university applications go through a special application procedure. http://www.ouac.on.ca/105/ Note that Colleges and Universities in the USA have a more extensive application process often beginning in early October. • February 24 Entrance Applications U of M (qualifies students for any further scholarships possibilities) • March 1 Entrance Application U of W (qualifies students for any further scholarships possibilities) • May 1 Deadline for all applications University of Manitoba

  7. Scholarships • Academic Standing/Grades This varies form scholarship to scholarship so students need to check these details out before beginning the process. The more national the scholarship the greater the competition. • Community Service What special services have you provided to the greater community outside of school life? • Extra-Curricular Commitment The after 3:15 crowd..drama, student council, sport, yearbook, newspaper etc.. • Cultural Affiliation Special scholarships exist for culturally active students in Italian, Pilipino, Polish, Aboriginal, Scandinavian to name a few

Scholarships continued • Future Career Choices Scholarship availability for students pursuing studies in business, teaching, medicine, engineering • Workplace/Membership Check out your parents workplace, places connected with unions or membership affiliations (Canadian Legion, Sobey’s, Wendy’s, Knights of Columbus, Credit Unions, Manitoba Labour) • St. Paul’s Scholarships Criteria is more focused on commitment in activities than the academics.(Duncan Norrie, Acheson-Cadieux)

  10. ReferencesSome key points to keep in mind • Choose references/referee carefully How well do they know you? What area of your life are referees associated with?   13. University? • 90% of SPHS graduates go on to university study • University is not the only option • Travel, work-study programs, working for a year, colleges, technical trades, armed forces, apprentice programs are just a few of the many options

  14. Your Future It really depends on you. How motivated are you? Your ability to put in the time required to see “what is out there”, what is available to you in terms of finances, scholarships, choices of post-secondary institutions, and further career opportunities.
