Introduction Client Background: The Body Shop International plc, known as The Body Shop, has 2,400 stores in 61 countries, and is the second largest cosmetic franchise in the world, following O Boticario, a Brazilian company. The Body Shop is headquartered in Littlehampton, West Sussex, England, was founded by the late Dame Anita Roddick and is now part of the L'Oréal corporate group “You’ve got to be hungry – for ideas, to make things happen and to see your vision made into reality.” Dame Anita Roddick. Human Rights Activist Founder of The Body Shop The very first The Body Shop® store opens on 26th March 1976 in Brighton, on the south coast of England. By 1978 a kiosk in Brussels became the first overseas franchise, and by 1982 new shops open at the rate of two per month. The Body Shop becomes part of the L'Oréal Group and de-lists from the London Stock Exchange on July 12 2006. It retains its unique identity and Values and continues to be based in the United Kingdom. In January 2008 Sophie Gasperment joins The Body Shop, assuming the role of Chief Executive from June 2008. Source: www.thebodyshop.co.uk Brief: To design and create a his and her perfume bottle to accomplish what doesn't exist already, and to create a prototype, packaging, perfume samples to hand out to customers, and a point of sale stand to promote the perfume bottles. Situation: The Body Shop has sold perfumes for mainly women and aimed their products towards women. They have never had something designed for men as well as women. A product which is something that is unique and extraordinary. The perfume is going to sold all year round, so it is suitable for any occasion, there are also gift boxes the perfumes come in, for presents to give to one another. The his/her perfume is a perfume which is designed for couples and married couples so they can share the perfume, instead of buying two different bottles. The idea is to make a split bottle for both men and women. Below is a gnat chart to show how I am going to use my time effectively, and how long I am going to spend on each section. I need to keep to this time otherwise I would not be able to meet deadlines for the project.
I carried out a survey to ask my target market what they wanted in a new perfume bottle for both his and her. I asked 20 people at random of the public, ten female and ten male aged 20 and above to answer a questionnaire I produced to help me decide what sort of perfume to produce and the themes, size and so on. I chose to ask male and female because I want to create a his and her perfume for couples or husband and wife, where they can buy two perfume bottles together for a cheaper price rather than buying a perfume separately where is it more expensive to buy. Questionnaire After carrying out the questionnaire and gaining results, I found out that many people liked and disliked many things,. For example, the male gender disliked the colour pink as they thought it was too feminine, and they rather preferred colours which are bold and stand out, for instance, blue, green, two toned colours and orange, silver etc. However it was a little different for the female gender as they preferred a variety of colours , for example, pink, red, yellow, two toned colours, blue, purple etc. Both men and women prefer to buy the medium sized bottles because the bigger the bottle is, the more expensive it becomes, and sometimes the perfume bottle from a size 50ml to 100ml is a vast difference in price range. I also found out that men rather prefer winter cold and icy white themes for their perfume bottle, rather than sweet smells like summer blossom. On the other hand women also prefer winter cold themes as it is not sweet, but natural. They also prefer elegant and natural perfumes because it makes them feel sophisticated and feminine. This graph shows that more people preferred to buy perfumes in the £20 - £30 range and then the next preferred price range is the £30 - £40. This indicates that people do not like to spend a lot on perfumes, as it is only a scent for people. This chart shows that the colours that people prefer more on a perfume bottle is blue and silver, however the most preferred colour is two toned colours because it is different and unique. Price Range This chart shows the size people prefer in perfume bottles. The most preferred size is the 50ml bottle and then the 30ml because it is cheaper and also it is small and not taking up a lot of space on shelves or other places. This graph shows that many people prefer unique design perfume bottles because they stand out and they are different. They do not copy other designs and that is what makes people buy them, due to the individuality. In conclusion to the results I will include the followings things in my design, the colours blue, silver or two toned colour therefore it would not discriminate against either gender. The shape I will do for the perfume bottles are a unique design because people prefer it to be different and more eye catching and appealing. The theme I will do for the perfume bottle will be an elegant with icy white theme as it is what people would prefer. The size of the perfume bottle will be either 30ml or 50ml, as it what people would prefer to buy as it is cheaper and easy to store in places compared to big perfume bottles. The price would range between “£20 - £40”, depending on the size of the bottle and the value of perfume bottles that are out in the market now. The type of text for the perfume bottle would be Script because it makes the product seem handmade and also elegant, as well as showing the product is good quality. The theme that people most preferred was the elegant theme and the icy white theme. This is because mostly adults wear perfume and want to be or feel more sophisticated and men want to feel masculine as well as unique. Summer blossom was also a theme which people liked but some people said that summer scents are rather sweet and strong for their liking. This chart shows that script text is more preferred by the public because it shows the good quality of the product, and it shows that it is handmade even though it may not be. Decorative typeface font was the next preferred text because it gave a unique look to a product, and made it stand out.
Ergonomics Force/Strength Materials, have to be strong and non-breakable. Under any force that is applied to the product. The force is mostly applied to the side of the product as that is where, customers always hold the product. The perfume bottle should not be damaged and broken in the packaging hence the reason why the material needs to be strong and the packaging needs to be done properly to reduce broken and faulty products. The material the perfume bottle is made out of, cannot affect the perfume inside and toxic the fragrance. The perfume bottle packaging must withstand the forces applied by customers without breaking and tearing. It has to stay the same shape and stay good quality through any forces put upon the packaging. The material must be thick, strong, good quality, look and appeal to the customers and scratch resistant because the material therefore doesn’t break, will appeal to the customers, and the image and printing will not be ruined on the packaging. Laminating card could be used as it is scratch resistant, and it will appeal to the customers. When designing and making the perfume bottle for both men and women, I have to take into account the hand dimensions, the hand grasp and so on, so when the customers use the product it needs to be ergonomic, (comfortable) to hold and use, and also not slip out of the hand either. It also needs to be easy to spray the perfume with out any problem of the bottle slipping or breaking. Using the diagrams above will enable me to design a perfume bottle for both men and women which is ergonomic and perfect for my target audience to use. The arrows are pointing to where the force will be applied therefore, those areas in particular need to be strong to withstand the force being applied by customers. The lid of the box will start to open, therefore showing the poor quality of packaging and the product. When Forces are applied here
Colour Typography Warm Colours,- Red, Orange, Pink. Script MT Bold French Script MT Blackadder ITC Summer Colours This font when used looks handwritten and makes the product seem handmade. It is clear to read but sometimes people can’t read it due to the joined letters. This would be good to use for my product as it makes it looks elegant This font looks handwritten, however it is not very suitable for perfume bottles as you can not read what it says, it is not clear to the audience, and not understandable. This font is Script, and looks elegant as well as hand written. It could be suitable for my product because it shows a product to be good quality and handmade. Felix Titling Edwardian Script ITC Gigi This font is similar to Serif, as it has the Serif, the bar etc on it. This type of font suggests high quality which is what I want, however it does not appeal to me very much, and it is more likely to be aimed at older people, hence the reason why THE TIMES is Serif Typeface. This font is Script, and looks handwritten, however it would might be suitable for my product as it is to give the impression that it is handmade, and elegant. This font is unique however it looks childish and not suitable for my product. It doesn’t give the impressions that the product is good quality, elegant and neither handmade. Contrasting Colours Palace Script MT Forte This font is Script, and looks like a handwritten font. It would show the product to be high quality and elegant. However it is very hard to read and it not understandable compared to the other fonts, hence the reason why it would not be suitable for my product. This font looks handwritten, and it is clear and understandable to read, however it may not be suitable for my product because it is too bold, doesn’t make the product seem good quality, and elegant. Also it doesn’t give the impression that the product is handmade. Cool, Winter Colours.- Blue, Green. Georgia Monotype Corsiva I have analysed some fonts, to help me decide which one is suitable for my product and what would appeal to the audience. I annotated a variety of fonts to help me in the process of choosing what is the best font to use in the product. Above is a Colour Theory. It would help me to choose the type of colours which is suitable for my product. The colours need to stand out and appeal to the audience, therefore I analysed the colours stating whether they are contrasting, dark, summer colours to help me choose the colours that would appeal to the customers. This font is understandable and easy to read. However it doesn’t show sophistication and elegance. It doesn’t show the product is good quality and neither the impression of it being handmade. This font is very clear to understand and read, and it gives the customers the impression that the product is good quality. Also it indicates elegance reflecting the product. Dark Colours, - Dark Blue, Dark Green.

Task Analysis How will I ensure my product is environmentally friendly? To ensure my product is environmentally friendly, I will use recyclable materials and also biodegradable materials, as they are good for the environment, the body shop used natural things in their products, therefore I have to use natural resources or resources that can be recycled or reused. Plastics are durable and degrade very slowly. The molecular bonds that make plastic so durable make it equally resistant to natural processes of degradation. However some resources are biodegradable but release toxic gases into the atmosphere to cause environmental problems. What type of finish will I use? The type of finish I could use on the material to make it look good is spray varnish to give a high quality finish look. This is to show the buyers that it is a high quality product and that they are not being mislead by what they buy. Who is my product aimed at? My Product is aimed at Couples, Married couples (Husband and Wife) from the age range of 20 years old and above because there isn’t many perfume bottles that exist as his and her together. It will be cheaper to buy as it is together. However it can come in gift packages to give to people. Also the target market is 20 and above because many young people and teenagers would not be interested in a product for his and her but a product for themselves only. Where will my product be most used? My product will be most used in the shop at first but then, in people’s homes, it will be used on people’s clothes or skin. It could also be used when people travel, as it is a fragrance. What materials could I make my product out of? The type of materials I could use in my product is plastics because when they are heated they can mould to any shape using various types of machines, such as the vacuum forming machine. Also I could use a thermosetting plastics because when it heats and then moulded , you can not mould it again after heating it. I could use wood as I can carve into the wood and make designs and wood is easy to cut and shape, depending on the shape. I cannot use glass as it is hard to shape and mould into any shape, and it would not be environmentally friendly and it would be an expensive process. For Packaging I could use card and varnish it or laminating to make it strong and high quality. People would be interested in buying it as it doesn’t look poorly made or poor quality. When is the deadline for finishing the project? The deadline for finishing the project is the 26th of March 2010. Therefore I will need to use my time effectively in order for me to finish the project on time and complete everything I need to, to the highest possible that I am capable of. How many units of the product do I need to make? The product will be batch produced because there are limited stores around the UK. There are not many body shops unlike the worldwide companies such as Dior and Gucci. Therefore not many products need to be produced. It is better to batch produce than mass produce because if the product is not sold as often not a lot of money will be wasted, therefore there would not be hardly any loss in the money being made. How long will it take to finish the product? It will take about 30 weeks to finish the whole project, which includes the model making, research, designing, and evaluating things against the specification. How structurally strong might the product have to be? The product needs to be strong so the perfume bottle doesn’t break and can withstand the forces of human hands. The packaging of the product needs to also be strong, to protect the perfume bottle from being damaged and breaking and the lid of the packaging needs to be strong so it doesn’t open and so the perfume doesn’t fall out and drop to pieces after being shattered. What tools and machinery could I make my product out of? I could use a variety of machinery. The tools and machines I could use are the laser cutter to cut the shapes of the product precisely, the vacuum forming machine to create the perfume bottle. I could also use the vinyl cutter to create the letter and place them on the product. For plastics I could use the blow moulding or injection moulder to create a unique shape. What would the colour scheme be for the product? The colour scheme I could use is the elegant theme together with the icy white theme. Therefore I would use the colours that the public like such as blue, silver and two toned colours. This would make the perfume stand out because the metallic silver colour will be bold and stand out amongst other perfumes.
Task Analysis Continued... Where do I think I will find out what I need to know to design it well? To design the product well, I will need to gather research in order to help me with creating my product and carry out a questionnaire/survey, gaining results from my target market , to help me create a product suitable for them and meet their requirements. I would need to search for existing products of perfumes for him and her and packaging to help me produce a unique and eye catching product. What is the purpose of the project? The purpose of the project is design and create a new perfume bottle for his and her, aimed at my target market of couples, aged 20 year and above. I have to attract the males and females to buy this product as it would be a value for money and it is combined for both men and women. Also to promote the perfumes by advertising posters, free samples of perfumes in order to convince them to buy it. What is the budget to make the product? The budget would be around £60 for the materials and other things needed to produce the product, as well as the things the school will provide in order to make my product. What are the safety considerations I will have to think about when designing and making my product? The safety considerations of the product are that it will have to pass the British Standards test. The product can not break easily so it does not harm anyone. The product has to show allergy information and the safety marks such as the CE. The safety must also be taken when the product is being made, the health and safety procedures should be taken into account so no one will get hurt when the product is being made. Why am I designing and making this particular product? I an designing and making this product in order for more perfumes to be sold at the Body Shop as there has not been many sales in the fragrance area compared to the rest of the products they sell. It will also be a value for customers as they get two perfumes at a cheaper price for both his and her together which is different to all the products they have ever sold. The design of the bottle will be unique in order to attract the customers attention and posters and adverts will be produced to promote the perfume to increase the sales when the perfume is out in shops. Where would my product be sold to its target market and what might I expect to sell it for? How would I find out what an appropriate price was? My perfume for his and her will be sold in The Body Shop stores. To discover the most appropriate price to sell the perfumes at I will have to take into the account the amount I spent on producing the product and the results from carrying out my questionnaire which was that people would prefer to spend between £20-£40 on a perfume bottle therefore I could sell the product at around £60 as it is for two perfumes his and her and it can come in special gift box too which is around the same price as well, and the customers will save a lot of money. I could also look at the prices Body Shop is selling the perfumes for and other brands at around £50-£60 in order to find out whether my product will be sold a lot at the price I will sell it for.
Product Analysis I have analyzed products that are already on the market now. I looked at the good and bad points of the products in order to help me with designing and making my product. I can use some ideas that have already been used and do something similar because if the product is being sold a lot with that particular design then I can do a similar design, to make my product stand out and be sold more. This product is produced by body shop, and it is a very simple and plain design showing the elegance and sophistication of the design. The body shop uses resources that either can be reused, environmentally friendly and is natural, hence the reason for the simple and plain design. I don’t really like the design of the bottle as it would not attract people’s attention and it doesn’t stand out like other designs. This product is Kouros by Yves Saint Laurent. It is a men’s aftershave. The shape and design of the bottle is unique and bold. It appeals and stands out to the male gender because of the use of colours and the big bold font. The silver and white colours go really well together as one another stands out on top of each other. The metallic silver on the bottle shows class to the perfume, showing the user that it is a high quality perfume. It stands out in the shops because of the use of bright colours and there is not other bottle with this design so it would be sold more and appealing. Source: http://www.altlimited.com/shopping/images/uploads/TBS-magnolia.JPG This product is also produced by the body shop, and it is also plain and simple, because it reflects their natural theme. The product would gain the customers attention because of the use of the colours, which stand out as they are bright and of various colours. The use of the image on the bottles makes the bottle stand out otherwise it would be too plain, and not many people would buy it. The use of a flower reflects their natural theme for their products, as flowers are natural and come from the earth’s atmosphere. This product is Antaeus, produced by Chanel. This is a Aftershave for men. It has a modern design due to the block shape for the bottle. The writing stands out and it is bold . It will appeal to the male gender a lot as it is a unique bottle, and the simplicity of the design. Due to the simple design of the bottle is shows sophistication. The male gender aftershaves are mostly simple and bold because men don’t like too much on the bottle, they would rather go for a simple, yet unique design. It would be good to use this sort of design as it appeals to the audience and it is the sort of simplicity the male gender prefer. This product is produced by The Body Shop. It appeals to the audience because of the use of the right colour blue and the design on the bottle, it is also a simple, plain design but it catches the audience’s attention because of the use of colour, and the metallic lid because it shows elegance and sophistication as well as class, showing the product is good quality and worth the money it is sold at. However the negative point of the bottle is that it may be a little too plain for the audience nowadays as it may not attract them to the perfume bottle. This product is also produced by the body shop, and it attracts the customers attention because of the use of the two colours combined together. The colours go well together, and makes the bottle look unique which is the look I want to go for on my product that I am going to produce. The shape of the bottle is bold but it would not stand out as much in the body shop because there are many perfumes with the same design. I would not use this particular design for my perfume bottle as it would not appeal or attract the audience’s attention as well, and it would not be sold a lot. This product is Coco Chanel Perfume. It has a simple, plain design, which is made out of glass. The use of glass shows elegance and sophistication which shows class. Therefore people will like to buy this product due to the look, and the quality of the product and the design. This product is mostly aimed at adults in the age range of 30 and above because of the design and many young adults would not really prefer this design but more of an abstract eye catching design. Therefore this design would not really be good to do as it would not appeal to my target market. This product is the Dunhill Pursuit Aftershave for men. It is plain and simple, which is what men like as they are not too fussed at what the perfume bottle design looks like, as long as it is comfortable to hold and it is not easily slipped out of the hands. The name “Dunhill” is bold and stands out on the bottle which shows me that when I design and make the “his” bottle, I could do a bold text which stands out towards men. The metallic lid shows elegance and class towards men, which shows the type of target market they are aiming to, which is working, upper class men. Source: www.thebodyshop.co.uk
This product is a Men’s Aftershave. It has a chunky bottle design which is simple and plain. However I don’t really like the design because it looks like a normal bottle, which would not stand out in stores. The use of texture is good on the bottle as it makes it look different, so I could consider using texture to make my design stand out. This product is Jadore by Christian Dior. The bottle design is unique and would appeal to the audience because the design shows sophistication and elegance. The use of curves shows feminine features to attract the female gender. The use of metallic gold colour shows class of the bottle. This design would be good to use as it is different, although it is plain, it stands out, due to the design and colours used. The Body Shop mainly does plain designs therefore this design would be good to use and it would be different as most of The Body Shop designs are shaped in blacks or cuboids. This product is Homme Fresh by Kenzo. This product is a different shape and design, the bottle is plain however it would appeal to the customers because of its simplicity. However there is no indication of what the product is, it doesn’t have a name therefore would not appeal to the audience because they would not know what the product is. This bottle design would not be good to use as it is too plain, more plain than the existing body shop perfume bottles so it would not appeal to the audience at all. This product is Touch of Pink by Lacoste. It is a very unique bottle due to the fact that it is two toned and not shaped in a regular bottle shape, it is a curved triangle shape. The name of the perfume reflects the bottle design and colour which is pink. The glass reflects elegance, and the pink rising from the bottom indicates the “Touch Of Pink”. It would appeal to the audience a lot because it has a design that no other bottle has, and the use of glass shows sophistication and elegance. I would consider using this type of colours, two toned as it is different and would stand out in The Body Shop. This product is Fragile by Jean Paul Gaultier. The product is different and unique because no other perfume has a snow dome on the tope as a lid. However it does reflect the name of the product FRAGILE because snow domes are fragile and the use of the liquid inside the snow dome reflects that. The snow dome breaks easily and can be shattered into pieces therefore fragile! The use of gold and black shows elegance, and the quality of the product. A feature on the bottle would be good to do for my perfume bottles because it gives a different look and appeals to a wide range of audience. This product is Tendre Poison, created by Christian Dior. The bottle is unique and reflects the name of the product. The colour green reflects poison and jealously, which suggests that the creators wanted people to think that when they wear the fragrance everyone will be jealous of them. The design of the bottle doesn’t really appeal as much because the colour green is very dull and looks very plain. It looks like a ordinary perfume bottle, therefore I wouldn’t really use this design for my bottle. This product is a gift set for Jean Paul Gaultier’s perfume Fragile. It is a unique gift box shape due to the shape being a dome. It reflects the dome on the lid of the perfume giving it an authentic look meaning it is not a copied design. The vacuum formed shape of the bottle is good to use for my product design the product will not fall out and become damaged. It makes it look well presented if it is in a vacuum formed shape. The texture on the lid of the gift set makes it look realistic, which attracts the customers attention.
This product is Eau Torride by Givenchy. The product has a simple design and the bottle is plain but the use of the colours swirled together on the lid is eye catchy towards the audience because it stands out and it differs from other products that have been created as no other product has that design on their bottle. The name is not stated on the bottle, neither is the company is was produced by, telling us nothing about the perfume. This is not good, not stating the name or company because then customers would not know where it has come from. For my product I would put the name and company on the bottle, no matter where or how small, as long as it is somewhere on the bottle. This product is Odyssey by Avon. This bottle design is dissimilar to the rest of the designs due to the lid being a bunch of flowers, and the curves of the bottle show femininity of the bottle, clearly showing who their target market is. The use of colours are feminine, as the colours are pink and an white transparent colour. Also the bottle has engraved flower designs on the side, linking to the lid. This product is Moonwind by Avon Cosmetics. This product stands out a lot due to the shape of the bottle, which is a unicorn. The lid is the horn of the unicorn. The glass bottle has been carved to show the details of the unicorn showing the uniqueness of the design. No other bottle has this design, hence the reason why I prefer this design to most of the others. However it may not appeal to everyone as many people may not like unicorns, limiting to the number of people it is targeted at. This product is from Avon. The use of the petal shaped lid suggests that the perfume is flowery and summery. Although the design is plain and simple, the lid makes the bottle design stand out, the use of the colour metallic pink stands out from the transparent colour of bottle. However I would not really use this sort of design for my perfume bottle because it looks too simple and doesn’t really appeal to me as it is a normal bottle with a different shaped lid. This product is Premier Jour, produced by Nina Ricci. This bottle is a cylinder shape however the lid has been produced in such a different way that the product would appeal a lot to the audience . The lid is not directly on the product but half off the bottle. Premier means first in French and therefore the use of the lid being the way it is shows a staircase , reflecting the name of the product. This product is by Yves Saint Laurent. The bottle although plain, looks different to other bottles due to the pattern and design of the bottle. The bottle appears to be more masculine rather than feminine due to the masculine colours and the patterns of strips going around the bottle. I don’t really particularly like the design because it doesn’t appeal to the audience as much, mainly those who like the Yves Saint Laurent perfume collection.
Packaging Analysis The packaging of this perfume bottle for Jean Paul Gaultier Fragile, looks appealing as the colours go well together, the black stands out well on top of the off cream. The lid design on the bottle is the graphics on the packaging showing a glimpse look of the bottle. The use of FRAGILE in red stands out highlighting the name of the product. The packaging is simple and elegant, yet appealing and attractive to the customers. This is the look I want to go for as it would appeal to my target market of the people aged 20 and above. Above is a Net of a box. I have shown a net of a box to show the parts of the net and why it is needed. I have labelled the parts and stated what the use of it is. Tabs are used to stick the net together and so it is secure. Top (Lid) This packaging for Euphoria Perfume bottle is plain and simple, but can a elegant look. The colour is different as it is a purple metallic colour which gives a shine to it. Although the box is plain, maybe due to the bottle as it is abstract and different. However it is boring and not what I want for my packaging design as it would not appeal to my target market. The packaging on its own is dull, and would mainly be aimed at older people, if the bottle wasn’t there to be shown. The packaging for the Kouros aftershave would appeal to men as they don’t like a lot of design on their packaging, they prefer simple and plain designs that look unique. The use of the colours blue shows masculine colours, and the different tones of colours, blue and dark blue appeals to the audience. The text stands out on top the blue as blue and white are contrasting colours therefore they would stand out on top of either colour. This design would not really be good to use as it is plain and dull due to the colours, showing it would not appeal as much to the men if it was different brighter colours. Side Fold line is to fold the net into place to make a cube or another shape. The packaging for the Christina Aguilera perfume, is very appealing due to its unique and authentic design. Although the shape is a regular box, the design makes it look different. The graphics used is floral and very feminine, showing that it is meeting the target market of women. The black and pink stand out very well on top of each other, making the black stand out , but the name of the perfume being red stands out, not letting the graphics over power the text. This design may be good to use for my product for the “her” bottle as it will appeal to the audience. Side Bottom Side Scoring line, it is used so when the card is folded, it won’t crease and it will have a good finish as it looks neat and tidy. Side The packaging for the Love ETC… bottle by the body shop is unique, due to the design of the wheel into different colours which has parts shaped like hearts reflecting the name of the product. The use of the white background and the different colours is good because any colour on top of white stands out. The packaging as a whole looks plain and simple, yet appealing as the designs, graphics and text stand out. It would be good to use this design because it appeals and looks unique. The packaging for Britney Spears Curious is unique and appeals to the audience a lot, because the packaging design has cut out where the underneath colour is showing, which no packaging has which I have analysed so far. Also the box doesn’t opened like normal boxes, it has a slid lid, making it different to other packaging. The colours go well on top of each other, but the text doesn't stand out as much as the design and colours over power it. The type of opening on the box would be good to use in my design as it is different to other packaging designs. The packaging of Gucci by Gucci is very plain and simple. The writing stands out on top of the grey, but the colour grey looks very dull, and would not appeal to a wide range of audience. People who like Gucci would like it but other people may not. The colour grey reflects sad emotions and the weather of rain and cloud. I don’t like the packaging of this bottle because it wouldn’t appeal to the target audience very well, and the use of colours is dull and boring. However the plain and simple design shows elegance which is what I want for my packaging.
Point Of Sale Analysis This point of sale stand is very appealing to the audience because it is made out of glass but it is not presented like normal stands as the perfume bottle sits in the middle of the glass. The use of the circle reflects the perfume bottle shape too. However the glass can break easily so it may not be a good material to use in the display stand, instead a thermoplastic can be used so it would not break. The glass has a good finish to it to attract the audience to it. The colour is transparent but may not appeal to the audience as mush because it needs colour to make it stand out. This display stand is good because of the way it is presented. Also the fact that four perfume bottles can fit on the stand is good because many customers can look at a perfume bottle at a time. The shape of the display stand is made in the shape of a egg and the egg can open and close will attract the attention of the customers because it is unique and also no other stand has been produced that way. Also the colours give an antique look to the stand, showing the perfume scent will be strong and classy. The use of gold is good because it gives a elegant look and also showing the product may be expensive. However, it may appeal to some customers who like antique things, but may not appeal to all customers, therefore the product may not be sold as much. This display stand is good because of the use of the idea of having two bottles in one stand. It would be good to do something like this in my stand because I am doing a his and her perfume bottle stand. The use of the metal and the natural colour is good because no colours are needed to colour it. It also gives an antique look to the stand, and it will appeal to those who like antique and old products. It also shows that the product may be expensive because of the natural colour of the metal, as it seems like an off gold. It has a different shape to it as well, and it also seems like a candle holder due to the way the perfume bottles sit on the stand. The lid of the perfume bottle matches the material used fort the stand, linking the perfume bottle and the stand together. This point of sale stand is very appealing to the audience and has never been done before. The name of the perfume reflects the stand due to the red door. The white, red and gold colours are showing elegance, and the white colour on the poles and top semi circle has a marble effect to actually show it to be a real red door on a house that is very expensive. The text on the top stands out on top of the white as gold is a metallic colour and will stand out on most colours. The colour red stands out due to the red overpowering all the colours on the stand. The edges on the stand however needs to be smoothed to prevent anything happening to the customers when they touch the stand. It is a good stand as it would instantly gain the audience’s attention due to the way it is made and shown, and also the door of a house creates a different stand compared to the other existing stands. The display stand is good because of the use of the shape of the circle but split into quarters. The levels are good because most display stands are on one level. The use of the mirrors are a good effect to use to attract the customers because when the perfume bottle sits on the stand it is reflected. However there is no other colours on the stand and it is very plain so it would not be very interesting to look at and also is looks boring. Also the perfume bottle can slide off as there is no support for the perfume bottle. I would not use this design in the display stand because it is not very appealing and looks boring and plain. I have analyzed point of sale display stands that are already advertising perfumes now. I looked at the good and bad points of the point of sale stand in order to help me with designing and making my point of sale stand. I can use some ideas that have already been used and do something similar because if the product is being sold a lot with that particular point of sale stand design then I can do a similar design, to make my point of sale stand, stand out and be sold more.
Materials Analysis It would be good to use wood for the model as I can carve into it, engrave details and designs onto it. Also I can paint it, create effects onto it, and varnish it to give a finishing look. I could also use it for the display stand as it can be cut using the laser cutter, it can be sanded, and carved to any shape I want for the stand. It would be good to use for the perfume bottle as it can be cut using the laser cutter, engraved into and it can also be used for the display stand as it is strong and comes in a variety of colours. It would be good to use foam board for the display stand as it is good and strong. It will not break under a lot of force and it has a smooth surface. It would be good to use card for the packaging on the product as I can use varnish or laminate to give a good finish and also it comes in various colours. It would be good to use plastic, a thermosetting plastic as it would be strong and it can not melt again and be reshaped. The perfume bottle will be strong and not break easily. Also the price of it, is not expensive therefore we would save money and it would be a value for money. It would be good to use corrugated card for the packaging to hold the perfume in place so it won’t move and break. Also it can be painted tor coloured to look appealing to the audience.
A finish is in simple terms a coating, layer or skin applied to the material. The finish will be applied for one or more of the following reasons: . 1) To protect the material from moisture, wear, abrasion, fungus, mould or insect attack. 2) To change the materials appearance, its colour or texture. 3) To enhance the materials durability, surface hardness or other properties. Finishing Techniques This page contains finishing techniques that could be used for the perfume bottle, packaging and display stand. Finishing techniques are used to make the product look more appealing, and increase the long term effect of the product. METAL - Zinc Plating Zinc coatings prevent oxidation of the protected metal by forming a barrier and by acting as a sacrificial anode if this barrier is damaged. Zinc oxide is a fine white dust that (in contrast to iron oxide) does not cause a breakdown of the substrate's surface integrity as it is formed. Indeed the zinc oxide, if undisturbed, can act as a barrier to further oxidation, in a way similar to the protection afforded to aluminium and stainless steels by their oxide layers. The majority of hardware parts are zinc plated, rather than cadmium plated. . Possibly suitable for a display stand. PLASTIC - Polish Plastics don’t really need a finish but it looks more appealing if it did. Polish makes the plastic more shiny on hard plastics, also it can be applied by hand or a machine. CARD - UV Varnishing UV varnishing consist of a synthetic resin dissolved in an organic solvent. The solvent evaporates to leave a thin protective layer of varnish. It can be applied with a brush or a spray can. It protects the paper and the print as well. WOOD - Paint Paint on wood gives a good finish, and it can come in a range of colours. The wood, however needs to be smooth, sanded down, clean, undercoated and then paint can be applied. It would be good to use on a display stand to appeal to the audience and give a high quality finish. CARD - Laminating Laminating is a quick and effective way to finish a piece of work on paper or thin card. Laminating uses heat to sandwich the paper or card between two layers of plastic. It gives a professional finish to posters, menus and it protects the paper inside. METAL - Protective Paint Paint on metal keeps the metal protected, durable and waterproof. It is available in a range of colours and does not cost a lot. Paints can be sprayed on from a can or brushed on.. Possibly suitable for a display stand. WOOD - Polish Polish gives wood a smooth finish and leaves it shiny which appeals to people. Wood finishing refers to the process of embellishing and/or protecting the surface of a wooden material. METAL - Dip Coating The metal is heated to about 150C and dipped into a box of fluidised powdered plastic which melts onto the surface of the metal sealing it. The correct temperature of the metal can be gauged by the colour of the heated metal. In school the metal is generally heated using a brazing hearth. Possibly suitable for a display stand. WOOD - Varnish Varnish gives wood a glossy, tough, high quality, waterproof, clear finish. Varnish prevents the wood from becoming wet and damp and weak. It protects the surface of the wood from becoming worn out. Varnish makes the product looks high quality, smart and classy. I could use it in the display stand as it is strong and makes the product look appealing. METAL - Oil Blacking Oil blacking is a process where hot metal is dipped into oil leaving the metal blue or black surface protecting it from rusting and oxidation. It would make the product more appealing, and last longer as it is protected by the oil coating. Possibly suitable for a display stand.
Joining/Construction Methods Mortise and Tenon Joint On the right is a diagram of a Mortise and tenon joint. There are many other mortise and tenon joints. The one on the right is a through mortise and tenon joint. Through mortise and tenons are often used on doors and gates. This joint has the tenon passing right through the leg or stile. Wooden wedges are often used to lock the tenon in place in situations where the joint has to withstand more than normal amounts of leverage. The joint would not fall apart easily and it will be strong and secure to use if I were to use wood joints for my display stand. Glues The types of glues that could possibly be used are, PVA Glue, epoxy resin, tensol cement, super glue, glue gun or a contact adhesive. These glues are good to use as they join the material together properly. Depending on the material a different glue is used to assure the best joint. Tensol Cement assures a permanent strong hold to the joint which would be good to use in my product as the parts would not fall apart. Dovetail Joint Ideal for the corner joints on the backs of drawers, the tapered shape of the 'tails' resist the forces applied to the joints when the drawer is in use. Apart from being a strong joint in some situations dovetails are used primarily for their decorative qualities. It would be good to use this joint as it would not fall apart and it would be strong and secure. Slotting Slotting is good to use as it is secure and stable. It allows the display stand or packaging to be folded when being delivered to save space and money. When the slots are on the display stand it makes it easier for the display to be put up, and also delivered and carried to places from other places. Slotting is mainly good for card and boards not wood, or other materials hence the reasons why there are different joints for wood and other materials. Metal Glue Metal glues are good to use with metals, as they join together properly. It would be good to use if I use metal for the product as it would not fall apart and give the metal strength so it would not fall apart.
Embossing Embossing is the raising of the surface of the paper or card in the shape of text or image so it stands in relief. Embossing involves raising areas of a card surface above the level of the rest. Embossing would be a good process to use as it stands out, and makes the product appeal more, and I could also use it in the poster to make it standout and different to other posters when advertising. On this page are a selection of production methods I could use in the making of the perfume bottle. I looked at what each one is and whether it would be good to use it in the production of my product. This will help me to design and make the product well made and be possible to produce in large quantities if necessary. I also looked at printing methods such as lithography as it can be used on the packaging and make it look appealing rather than it being printing off from a inkjet printer. Production Methods Vacuum Forming Vacuum Forming is a process where a plastic is moulded using a mould. The process of the vacuum forming is first a mould is made from a material such as soft wood. The edges and sides are shaped at an angle so that when the plastic is formed over it, the mould can be removed easily. The mould is then placed in a vacuum former. Then a sheet of plastic is clamped in position above the mould. The plastic is heated by the heater until soft and pliable. After a few minutes the plastic is ready , the vacuum is turned on and pumps out air. Then the mould is pushed up to the plastic and the plastic is cooled down. The plastic sheet is removed from the vacuum former and the sheet is shaped like the mould. The excess plastic is trimmed so that only the plastic shape is left. Mass Production Mass production is expensive and is not needed in making my perfume bottles because not a lot will need to made as it is only being sold in Body Shop and not a lot of people would buy a his and her perfume unless for a special occasion or something else. Therefore not a lot of money will be wasted. Die Cutting This is the method of cutting printed paper to shape. It works like a giant gingerbread man cutter, pressing the shape out of the paper or card cereal. Die cutting would be good to use on card, as it would be accurate every time and reduce the time needed unlike other processes. Screen Printing Screen printing is in common use today as it is relatively cheap and a variety of colours can be used. Screen printing can be printed on uneven surfaces, it can print onto surfaces that can not fit through a printing press, and it can be used in batch production. The only things that it is not good for is that only simple shapes can be printing, and it will not print fine detail. Therefore it may not be good to use as it doesn’t print fine detail and my product may have fine detail, as well as the posters have fine details which would not print in screen printing. Letter Press Letterpress is a form of relief printing. The printing area stands above the non-printing area. It was the first printing process. The printing area is inked and then pressed against the paper. This process is quite slow. Rotary letterpress is used to speed things up. It uses an aluminium plate which holds and text wrapped around a drum and is rolled over the paper. Just like the other methods of printing each of the four colours (CMYK) are added separately. It is mainly used for large amounts of text. It is not suitable for photos. This would be good for the writing on the poster, but it is not good to use much as my product, poster, and packaging will not have a lot of text. Lithography Lithography is a printing process. Lithography machines can print on both sides of paper/card and they rely on four basic colours; yellow, cyan (type of blue), magenta (type of red) and black. This is also known as the CYMK process. This process would be good to use for the poster to advertise the product and also it could be use for the packaging to give a good printing effect and appeal to the customers. Laser Cutter Laser cutting is a technology that uses a laser to cut materials, and is typically used for industrial manufacturing applications. Laser cutting works by directing the output of a high power laser, by computer, at the material to be cut. The material then either melts, burns, vaporizes away, or is blown away by a jet of gas, leaving an edge with a high quality surface finish. Industrial laser cutters are used to cut flat-sheet material as well as structural and piping materials. It would be good to use for the packaging as it would cut out the net of the box accurately and precisely. Also it would not take time as all you need to do it make a template on a CAD programme and print it out as many times as you want. Blow Moulding Below is a diagram showing how blowing moulding process works. It can make any bottle shape, and therefore may be good to use for my product as it is a perfume bottle. Batch Production Batch production is the manufacturing technique of creating a component at a workstation before moving to the next step in production. Batch production is good to use for the perfume bottle as it not going to be sold everywhere but the Body Shop stores only. There is not as many stores of body shop worldwide, therefore mass production is not needed but batch production instead.
Safety Quality Assurance & Quality Control The European Union has set up rules for selling certain types of products in the EU. The product has to pass certain tests in order for it to be sold anywhere in the EU. When my product goes on the market it needs to pass the tests of the CE otherwise it cannot be sold on the market. I will need to produce a production flow chart for quality assurance to help me through my project. The production flow chart helps me check and maintain the accuracy of the production process. Quality Assurance is achieved by having a system in place during the production for accuracy, the finish, quality and having measures in place to rectify errors or problems if they appear. The diagram on the left is a production flow chart which can be used in my project as it will help me check accuracy, finishing, quality etc, and if it goes wrong then the decision box will help to fix it and it will go back to the process stage above it, rather than the process stage underneath to ensure the problem is fixed. Quality Control is achieved by having production methods in place which minimise mistakes from happening, for example, jigs for cutting joints accurately each time using CAD as well as CAM in the manufacturing process to ensure all products that are created are all the same. In the production for my product everything in each product has to be the same, otherwise it would not be good for selling in the stores. The European Union CE Mark During the making of my project I need to consider all the safety considerations and procedures to stop anyone from getting hurt, no harm has come to anyone. To prevent this from happening, wearing goggles, safety apron are worn to prevent damage to the eyes and body. When using equipment all the safety procedures need to be taken, and checking everything works correctly. When using adhesives, the strong solvent cannot be inhaled as it can cause damage to the health and brain. My product needs to pass the risk assessments and also that the product must be made from strong materials so it doesn’t break easily and harm anyone. It must be a high quality product and to do this is has to meet all the safety requirements. The risk assessments are that is has to function properly without any faults, and making sure all edges are smooth, also the material used is high quality so it does not break, or shatter. The British standards kite mark is the British Standards Institute that has hand its own set of safety and quality guidelines for over 100 years. Products which display the BSI Kite mark have passed quality and safety checks. Customers see the Kitemark as a sign of quality. It can help sales of your product. The Kitemark is most visible on products where safety is important for example, fire extinguishers, glass, condoms, and glass windows. If the a product fails and injures someone, the fact that it has a Kitemark can be used in the manufacturing companies defence in court. It proves that they tried hard to ensure that their product was safe. The British Standards Kite Mark START PROCESS DECISION PROCESS

Research Conclusions I have found out a variety of things from my research and on this page I have stated what I have found out and how it can help me in my project and the final product.
Specification When my product is finished it will meet the following standards of design, finish, reliability and looks. This specification is based on the task analysis and brainstorm of the project. Target Audience:My final product will be aimed at couples, married couples (husband and wife) and it will be aimed at the age range of 20 years old and above because young people and teenagers would not be interested in a his and her perfume bottle collection as it is mainly going to be produced for adults. I have chosen this target market because couples, married people would prefer to buy this product then young people as it would not interest them. Materials:The materials I will be using to make my product should be lightweight and strong. For the packaging I will use card and then use UV varnish or laminate to make it appeal and give it a high quality finish and so the card doesn’t get damaged either. For the perfume bottle I would make it out of glass because it has a elegant look to it, however I cannot make it out of glass for the model so I could make it out of wood as it can be shaped into any shape and also it can be spray painted or coloured to make it look appealing. It can be carved and designed to a high quality standard. The wood can be varnished or polished to give a good quality finish. For the display stand, I could use acrylic as it has a good finish to it already and it appeals to the audience. Also levels can be made to present the perfume bottle and make it stand out. It has to cut easily by the laser cutter. For the inside support for the perfume I could use corrugated card as it is strong and easily to cut and can be coloured to look appealing. Safety:I must make my product as safe as possible, and in order to do this I will have to make sure the product passes all the safety regulations and tests for the CE and British Kitemark. I have to make sure it does not harm anyone and that everything is fitted correctly and properly. When using machinery I need to consider my own health and safety so I don’t harm myself and to this I would need to wear an apron and goggles. At the end, of each stage of the making a risk assessment needs to be carried out to ensure everything is properly stuck and there are no sharp edges and parts. Final Product used mostly:My final product will be used everywhere as it is light and can be carried to places, but it will mostly be used in people’s homes as people mostly use perfumes when they get ready to go somewhere. People can take it with them when they travel as it is light and easy to store and it would not break easily. Time:The project must be completed by around 30 weeks, because I need to research into how to solve the problem and survey the public into what they want in the new perfume bottle. I then need to design and make the product, display stand, posters, and packaging, ready to be evaluated at the end of the whole project. Tools and Machinery:The tools and machinery I will use to make the perfume bottle are the laser cutter as it can cut wood, also use the hand tools such as, files and sandpaper to sand edges and also the sanding machine to create smooth edges so it is safe and no one gets hurt. For the display stand I could the laser cutter too because it can cut acrylic out, and I don’t need to make the edges smooth because the laser cutter does it already. For the display stand I could use the laser cutter too to cut the acrylic out as it is simple and quick to cut the design and saves time. Deadline:The deadline for completing the project is by 26th March 2010. Therefore I need to design and make the product prototype before the deadline so it is ready to be displayed and evaluated. Environmentally Friendly:I will make my product environmentally friendly by using as much recycled material, also material that can be recycled, or used again such as wood. This is so the environment will not be effected in anyway and also it is better for the environment and planet. The packaging can be recycled as it is card, and can be shown by the use of symbols on the box. Finishing:The type of finish I will use on my final product is for the perfume bottle I would use, varnish or polish and paint to give the wood a high quality, appealing finish. For the display stand I could use a plastic polish to make it glossy and attract the customers. The packaging can be either UV varnished or Laminated so the card doesn’t get damaged and remains high quality. Best Sold:My product will be best sold in The Body Shop as the manufacturer of the product is The Body Shop. I can not sell it in another shop as it would not be right as The Body Shop merchandise is not sold anywhere else apart from their Shops. Joining Methods:The joining methods I could use for the display stand are epoxy resin glue which is strong to hold parts together in order for them not to fall apart. For the perfume bottle depending on if I have parts to stick together I could use tensol cement or glue guns to stick the pieces of wood together. For the packaging I could use slots or super glue so the perfume bottle does not fall out of the packaging. For the support of the perfume bottle I could use slots to join the corrugated card parts together so when it is pulled out of the packaging it can be easily dismantled and put back together again into the packaging. Weight:The product needs to be lightweight in order for the customer to pick it up and also carry it around. Therefore it would be easier to hold and not slip out of the hand. It has to also be lightweight because if people would like to take it with them when travelling it has to be easy to carry and place into bags without it taking up a lot of space.
