Course of a Motion • Course of a Motion • Member raises and addresses the chair • Chair recognizes member • Member states his/her notion • Another member seconds the notion • Chair states notion to chapter • Motion is debated if applicable • Motion is restated and voted upon
Parliament cont. • To make a motion: • “I move that…” • To amend a motion: • “I move that the motion be amended to read…” • Point of order: • “I raise to a point of order…” • Nominations: • “I nominate… for the office of…” • Second a motion: • “I second the motion.”
Decorum in Debate • Stay on track • Remarks should be made to the chair or parliamentarian (VP) • Be polite • Chair or parliamentarian has voice at all times • If a matter involves you, leave the room • After a vote is taken the issue is done
Voting • A member can change their vote until the result of the vote is announced to the chapter • Members who are absent are not counted
