  3. Mixing ethanol and water lab Fill half of a tube with water. Complete filling the tube to the very top with 95% ethanol that also has been colored but with food coloring. • Hold the tube between thumb and forefinger. Invert several times until mixed as judged by color. Note the air bubble. Note the temperature change. Note the feeling of suction on the fingertip.

  4. Questions: • The tube should feel hot after mixing. Would you expect the solution to contract or expand due the change in temperature? • Where does the heat come from? • How does the volume of the solution compare to the sum of the volumes of each solvent separately? Explain the effect on a molecular level.
