Annual Meeting of the FIU NSF CREST Center External Advisory Board Malek Adjouadi Subproject 2: Integrated Approach to Information Processing in Neuroscience April 4th 2012
MISSION: Elicit functional mappings of the brain and the causality of key brain disorders.MAINOBJECTIVE: Develop imaging methods that integrate recording modalities in time and space, so that clinicians and surgeons become more confident at prescribing a course of action.STRATEGY: Markers for the dysfunction are consistent across different recording modalities.
3D Epileptic Seizure Focus Localization Using an integrated Multimodal Neuro-Imaging System (EEG-fMRI) Bridging recording modalities to computers for data analysis
New Infrastructure Developments Transcranial Magnetic Stimulator
Distributed System Setup-Housed within EIC Facility- Multisite repository for pediatric epilepsy- Computational purposes
Outcomes of the past Year Research Outcomes • Made advances in (a) 3-D source localization of brain dysfunctions now put to clinical practice, organ segmentation (brain, liver), accurate volume calculations for in-context measurements and dosing, which are already benefiting patients and their families in South Florida. • Established the Mark Edwards Assistant Professorship in Neuroscience and Learning--Electrical and Computer Engineering –Tenure Track Position: Dr. Mercedes Cabrerizo. • Obtained a $2.9 M grant from the National Science Foundation -- Development of an Instrument for Information Science and Computing in Neuroscience. • Established the transcranial-Magnetic Stimulator Laboratory • Updated the Optimal Imaging Laboratory • Continue to consolidate our relationship with Baptist Hospital on Adult Epilepsy
