Foldable!! • Today, we will briefly go over four more lessons, and you will take a couple of notes on the second page of your foldable. • Let’s get started…
1.) Main Idea • The main idea of a text is the most important point that the writer makes. • Some facts and examples are important details that support the main idea and help you understand it. • Steps to finding the main idea: • Step 1. Read the passage carefully. • Step 2. Identify the topic of the passage (what's the passage about?). • Step 3: Ask yourself what you think the big idea is that the author is trying to tell you about that topic in the passage. • Step 4. See if the rest of the sentences in the passage refer to that big idea.
2.) Outlines and Summaries • A summary is a shortened version of an original text. • A good summary gives the main ideas and important details in a story. • An outline is a list of main ideas and important details that show the relationship between information. • _______________________________ A. ____________________________ B. ____________________________ • _______________________________ A. ____________________________ B. ____________________________
4.) Forms of Fiction • Fable-teaches a lesson, often using animals • Historical fiction-made up story that takes place in a specific time in history • Myth-a traditional story, usually with a hero • Science fiction-fantasy that uses science, such as robots or time machines • Adventure-character goes through many journeys • Fantasy-fiction that has elements that are impossible, or not real • Mystery-suspenseful story, not solved until the end • Realistic Fiction-a made up story that could actually happen
Practice Time!! • You will now have the rest of the period to practice these lessons. • It is important that you work hard on these activities and ASK QUESTIONS if you need help. • You will have 20 minutes at each station. • You are going to go to your #1 station first. When I say, “Switch,” you will go to your #2 station, and so forth. • ***Note: If there are too many people at one station, simply go to the next one on your list!! Then, you may go back. • At each station, take one worksheet, complete it, check your answers, and then put it back.
