Introduction • It is desirable to clarify factors that influence behaviour and compliance for effective clinical management. • The factors include special attitudes to orthodontics and personality variables • Insertion of new orthodontic appliance may diminish cooperation- considerable discomfort of unpleasant tactile sensations, feeling of constraint in the oral cavity, stretching of the soft tissues, pressure on the mucosa, displacement of the tongue, soreness of the teeth, and pain
The pain and discomfort at initial treatment may predict the acceptance by patient and treatment in general • Self confidence may be affected by speech impairment and visibility of appliance • Motivation in adult are guided by own perception of appearance, and feeling of center of attention by peers and acquintances
It is desirable to predict the level of compliance at treatment planning stage • Personal characteristics which is a motivator factor can be used to predict pain and influence compliance • Personal characteristics includes high self-esteem, self-confidence,obedience, expectations of self-efficacy and treatment outcome, appreciation of dental aesthetics perceived severity of malocclusion, and attitudes characteristic of oral health internal control orientation
