Right after he took office, US experienced worst recession since Great Depression. • Very brief, only lasted 1.5 years. • RR’s tax cuts quickly stimulated economy, ended recession, economy grew dramatically. • Even though RR promised reduced spending, balanced budget, no deficit, deficit grew during 1980s. • Due mainly to military spending, aid to countries resisting Communism.
