  2. Reduced the use of 50 000 polystyrene cups/month • Reduced cost of waste from R22 700/ month to R15 000/month • Constructed a grey water tank which saved them ¼ million litres water every month • Got bottle suppliers to eliminate disposable packaging to returnable trays

  3. Changed from fossil-fuel based raw material in ceiling insulation (‘think pink’) to using shredded used PET bottles (‘go green’) • Invested in small scale kenaf farming and constructed a factory to produce fabrics from fibres (Winterton, KZN)

  4. Saved R161 000 in operating costs by • reducing water use • saving electricity • recycling waste, and • growing their own herbs (cost of intervention +R40 000)

SA Sea Products reduced their monthly water consumption from R30 000 to R15 000 by installing spring nozzles on their hose pipes • Stopped using polystyrene containers in their fish take-aways - replaced with wax paper • St Helena Bay conducted a community beach clean up • Planted an orchard of olive trees on their site

  6. Reduced their electricity consumption over 3 months by R20 000 • Replaced all alien plants in their garden with indigenous plants • Started only irrigating the grounds at night • Established recycling depot on site • Started donating left-over food to poor

Replaced incandescent bulbs with CFL’s & energy saving fluorescent tubes • Installed timers on outside lights • Insulated all hot water pipes • New wing designed with large windows & skylights, energy saving access cards, dual flush toilets & aerated taps • Maximized use of heat pumps (e.g. pool heating) • Selective washing of linen • Curtains on walk-in fridges • Automated garden irrigation system works at night • Phasing out non-indigenous plants in gardens • On-site person sorting waste for recycling • Organic waste used to make compost • Used cooking oils returned to supplier for industrial use • Glass/plastic containers returned to suppliers • Phased out plastic water bottles for jugs/glass bottles • Redundant electronic components donated for parts • Phasing out the use of bleach for white uniforms • Back-to-back printing on recycled paper • Adopt-a-plot where they clear alien vegetation at Silvermine National Park • Launched their Green Conferencing facility 2008

  8. Employed person dedicated to sorting and separating waste • Began recycling • Diverted all wood offcuts from landfill to raw material for chipboards • Started an inventory of ingredients from all suppliers • Proceeds covered costs of staff training within 6 months
