  1. Riverlands Biomass presentation June 10, 2010

  2. Regional opportunity? • Two largely untapped “billion dollar” industries in region • Local/ regional foods • Bio-energy development

  3. True biomass availability

  4. What is a Biomass Asset Map? • A method for graphically showing all the relevant factors which allow an entity to make informed decisions related to the suitability and viability of their business plan. Factors shown will include: • Current feedstock availability/ competition • Potential feedstock availability/ competition • Transportation/ logistical issues • Availability of other required process inputs

  5. Uses of a Biomass Asset Map There are several uses for a biomass asset map: • Entities can visualize several critical factors taken together at once, something which can be difficult to do otherwise. • Based on an entity’s needs, location options become apparent. • A particular location’s limitations can be identified/ addressed and overcome if possible • Provides the basis to begin to identify the suitability of a particular business plan, and through that the ability to raise needed capital/ financing

  6. How Would Biomass Asset Map Coordinate With Regional Innovation Grant? Rural Business Enterprise Grant (RBEG) allows basic Asset Map infrastructure to be built and tested in NE Iowa regional biomass business plans prior to Regional Innovation Grant application. RIG application can focus on: • Quick expansion of map to entire region • Support for due diligence and financing needs for pre-identified regional businesses • Creation of regional community development templates for biomass opportunites

  7. Additional Capabilities Financial/ production modeling will be a component of the biomass asset map. • Will enable entities to see specific characteristics of a location and its financial impact on their success • Will enable entities to see what hurdles need to be surmounted to achieve long term success. • Will allow entities to conduct scenario analysis to plan for unfavorable circumstances and take steps to manage accordingly.

  8. Riverlands RBOG Application • Accurate asset map for region • Stochastic model for early due diligence • Regional collaboration for needed infrastructure improvements

  9. An Example of a Flow-chart for Products from Petroleum-based Feedstocks

  10. Analogous Model of a Biobased Product Flow-chart for Biomass Feedstocks
