  2. Education And Salary • A Bachelor's degree in retail, buying, marketing, fashion, business, or related field is preferred for a buyer position. One's major does not necessarily matter if the person is familiar with the fashion industry. • Very few people become major fashion buyers without first gaining experience from working under other experienced buyers in the fashion industry. • The entry level fashion buyer can make between $35,000 to $42,000 a year • The average fashion buyer makes an average of $61,000 a year • An experienced fashion buyer can earn upwards of $81,000 to $130,000 a year

  3. Personal Qualities • Fashion buyers should have a good sense of style and be able to predict trends. Possessing marketing skills will help an aspiring fashion buyer greatly since they must be able to promote the clothing and the store. • A fashion buyer must have leadership skills because she must direct the activities of others on the shop floor and in other departments within the organization.

Abilities To become a buyer you should have: • an understanding of what motivates customers to buy individual products • good analytical skills • creativity • the ability to recognize future trends • excellent commercial awareness • communication skills • confidence and presentation skills • the ability to make decisions under pressure • Negotiation skills.

  5. Duties • analyzing trends and consumer buying patterns • attending fashion shows and trade fairs to search out new products and suppliers • choosing product ranges • evaluating product quality and gathering customer feedback • placing supplier orders, and negotiating prices and delivery contracts • presenting collections and writing reports • working closely with retail merchandisers, visual merchandisers, designers and marketing personnel to review and track in-store customer reactions, sales performance figures and competitor activities.

Job Availability & Location • Buyer jobs can be found all across the united states but there is greater opportunity in New York and Los Angeles. • There are many Job opportunities as a buyer working for retail chains, department stores, and independently owned stores, as well as wholesale distributors.
