Why is the North American west coast warmer in the winter months and cooler in the summer months? • Winter: The ocean gives energy to the air above it in the winter time (heat flows from warmer to colder), which warms the air. This air is carried over land, which warms it. • Summer: The ocean water absorbs energy from the air above it, and the cooler air moves over the land and absorbs energy from it. • 21.
