Appearance • Average height: female is 17 to 19 inches male is from 18 to 20 inches. • Average weight for males and females is 33 to 50 pounds. • Average lifespan is 12 to 15 years. • A typical blue heeler has a mottled or speckled coat pattern with or without black, blue, or tan markings. • Strongly built and very compact, very muscular, great balance and power.

  3. Personality, Traits, Temperament • Like most dogs, a heeler is very loving and protective but, a heeler is also known for how extremely hyper it is and how it almost always want to be active. They are also known for having a high pain tolerance and being very focused on whatever task is at hand. • Again, like other dogs, the Blue Heeler, is always alert, intelligent, and brave but, they are very particular in how devotional and trustworthy they are.

  4. Personality, Traits, and Temperament cont. • A blue heeler always has a need and want to be around his or her owner. One of the biggest punishments you can give to a Blue Heeler is no attention. Heelers are particularly known for this strong bond they create, it can either be close with multiple members of the household, or have an extremely intense bond with one person. • The Heeler is naturally a guardian to its family and owners and will immediately become suspicious of new people and things. Otherwise, they are very happy, fun-loving animals.

  5. Uses • One of the main uses of a Blue heeler is cattle herding.Due to the way the Heeler is built, it is able to perform with great agility, strength, and endurance. It also can withstand heat better than any other herding breed.

  6. Disorders • A few major disorders and diseases known in this breed are the following: • Progressive Retinal Atrophy (PRA)- a hereditary disease that can cause blindness. It can sometimes be detected within the first year and sometimes not until after 5 or 6 years, and can easily cause blindness in the older dogs. • Canine Hip Dysplasia (CHD)- A hereditary disease that causes a hip socket malformation. This can sometimes totally cripple a dog within a year, and can lead to the owner making a decision to either buy hip replacements or have the dog euthanized. Not all dogs will be affected by this and some wont show any signs until old age. • Inherited Deafness- This can be checked immediately but observing if a pup is deaf for the first 6 weeks in one ear, then it will forever be deaf in that ear. Sometimes the other ear will have full hearing though.

  7. Other Facts • The Blue Heeler is also known as the Australian Cattle Dog. • It originated from crossings between Dingoes, Blue Merle Collies, Dalmatians, and Black and Tan Kelpies.
