Dimer acids or dimerized fatty acids are light yellow, transparent, viscous dicarboxylic acids that find application in the synthesis of polyamide resins and hot melt adhesives. They are also used in synthetic lubricants, corrosion inhibitors, alkyd resins, adhesives, surfactants, and fuel oil additives. Dimer acids are produced by dimerizing unsaturated fatty acids obtained from oleic acid, tall oil, canola oil, or cottonseed oil on clay catalysts. Dimer acids are also non-toxic in nature.
