Comparison between Parallel Data Transmission and Serial Data Transmission

The data between two computers is exchanged in either of the two transmission modes u2013 serial or parallel. Although most of us use computers, laptops, and several network devices,we are largely unaware of these data transmission types. These types are similar and dissimilar in many ways.   1. A Comparison of Parallel Data Transmission and Serial Data Transmission There are two transmission modes thorough which data is exchanged between two computers i.e. Serial or Parallel. These types are similar in many ways but they also have some differences. This post will help you understand the similarities and differences between Parallel Data Transmission and Serial Data Transmission An Overview of Parallel and Serial Data Transmission: Below points will help you understand the difference between these two transmission types: •Serial Transmission: In this type of transmission data is transferred in bits and only one bit is transferred at a time with the use of single link. •Parallel Transmission: Multiple links are used to transfer the data bits by placing them parallel to each other. In parallel transmission 8 bits of data can be transmitted simultaneously. Parallel vs. Serial Transmission: A Few Important Factors Compared Following points will help you in deciding which type of transmission is effective for your application: •Speed: Parallel Transmission is 8 times faster in speed as compared to Serial Transmission •Disturbances: There are chances of disturbance in parallel transmission as multiple bits are transmitted simultaneously. Whereas in serial transmission only one bit is transmitted at a time. •TransmissionDistance: Parallel transmission is used or short distance transmission because of electromagnetic interference. Which is why serial transmission is best suitable for long distance data transmission. •Converters: Serial Transmission requires converters to enable data conversion. Parallel transmission doesn’t require any converters. •TransmissionModes: Parallel Transmission can send 8 bits at time but it has half-duplex transmission mode. Whereas, serial transmission has full-duplex transmission mode. •Affordability: Serial transmission is much more affordable as compared to parallel transmission. •ComplexityofConnections: Parallel Connection require multiple devices and cables which makes it more complex. However serial transmission requires less cables for interconnectivity and space. •ClockSkew: Clock skew can be an issue in parallel transmission but this is not the issue in serial communication.
