The continuous increase of data center usage is leading the industry to increase the load density per square foot of existing facilities. High density (HD) IT load per rack demands bringing the cooling source closer to the heat load in contrast to room level air cooling. For high density racks, the use of In-Row Cooling systems is becoming increasingly popular. <br> <br>In-row cooling can be the main source of cooling for a data center or work jointly with perimeter cooling in what is called a hybrid cooled room level system. Also, hot or cold aisle containment can be integrated with Perimeter Cooling and used throughout the data center to reduce the mixing of hot and cold air. Currently, there has not been much work comparing the performance of In-Row Cooling in open versus contained environments. <br> <br>Benefits of Perimeter Cooling Technology:- <br> <br>1. Availability <br> <br>ï¬ Multi-functional Microprocessor Controller - Allows the units to restart after a power failure without intervention; Allows for room level redundancy with up to ten units operating in a group; User friendly navigation with icon based displays to indicate mode of operation as well as room conditions; Allows for communication with multiple Building Management System protocols. <br> <br>2. Energy Management <br> <br>ï¬ Building Management Systems - Units are designed to work with the most common BMS systems including BACnet and Modbus. <br> <br>ï¬ Network interface - Provides management by connecting the device directly to the network with a dedicated IP address, avoiding the need for a proxy such as a server. Management is available via Web browser, Telnet or SSH. Notification features inform you of problems as they occur. <br> <br> <br>3. Total Cost of Ownership <br> <br>ï¬ Economization - Achieved by utilizing cool ambient air during winter months to take advantage of economizer hours and eliminating compressor operation. <br> <br>The entire concept behind using various techniques to cool the data center is to prevent the heated IT exhaust from mixing with the cold air. The hot aisle and cold aisle containment is a step above the perimeter cooling method. The perimeter cooling method distributes cold air under the raised floor tile with no form of containment. Here large air conditioners work in parallel pushing in the cold air and drawing out the hot air. In such a situation, there is a chance of hot air and cold air mixing to get bring the temperature of the room to an average temperature. This prevents the formation of hot spots.
