NSF Programs of Particular Interest(in addition to core programs)-Henry Gholz MacroSystems Biology (BIO/MSB) – Apr. 4, annual First panel just concluded; regional-continental scale Wide scope, envisioned as forerunner of a NEON-driven research program Next due date April 4 Climate Change Education Partnerships, Phase I (CCEP-I) – Mar. 15 Decadal and Regional Climate Prediction Using Earth System Models (EaSM) – joint with NIFA 2011-awards in process; 2012 (?) Catalyzing New International Collaborations (OISE) – Mar. 1 Research Coordination Networks (RCN), now NSF-wide (via core programs, 1-2x/yr) www.nsf.gov - BIO/DEB

USDA –FS and NRCS Forest Service - Randy Johnson • NIFA-Forest Service-NASA Carbon Cycle call—awards in process • May have FS money for outside folks to do synthesis: Fire/smoke, GHGs, and aerosols NRCS – Carolyn Olson (IWG), Gregorio Cruz (CIG program manager) • Conservation Innovation Grants • development, adoption, and evaluation of innovative approaches • greenhouse gas (GHG) emission reductions and carbon sequestration on agricultural lands. • Due date February 11, 2011 • $5 million anticipated funding for 2011

USDA-NIFA - Nancy Cavallaro • New AFRI Foundational RFA— • Processes and transformations in air, water and soil • Critical environmental thresholds in agroecosystems • Innovative management practicies-decision support, models, technologies-to enhance ecosystem services • Climate Change RFA expected out Feb or March • Priorities in adaptation and mitigation—carbon nitrogen and water • Must relate to one or more of the following production systems: western conifers, ruminants, rangelands, and legumes • Sustainable Bioenergy RFA-Expected in March • Non-ethanol liquid fuels • Policy-related issues • Effects of land use change on wildlife and pollinators

DOE ProgramsMichael Kuperberg and Daniel Stover DOE’s carbon and ecosystems programs merged in FY 10 to Terrestrial Ecosystem Science (TES) Foundational science to improve our predictive understanding of terrestrial ecosystems in the context of a changing climate co-managed by Dan Stover and Mike Kuperberg anticipates annual solicitations Next call expected in FY 11 for funding in FY 12 www.science.doe.gov/ober/CESD/ter.html

NOAAKenneth Mooney, James Butler • Modest annual RFA from Climate program office: • Last year funded 9 projects, expects similar number for 2011 • Half or more of the projects NACP related • Three foci in 2010 • Ocean acidification • Biogeochemical ocean modeling with an emphasis on activities at GFDL • NACP with an emphasis on ESRL's Global Monitoring Division's CarbonTracker and atmospheric monitoring activities

USGS-Land Carbon Assessment:A call for collaborationPierre Glynn, Zhiliang Zhu, Leo Liu • A Congressional mandate to DOI/USGS • A scenario-based assessment of present and future biological carbon stocks and fluxes across the US • Effects of both natural and anthropogenic processes such as fire and land use • Ecosystems including forests, wetlands, croplands, shrub and grasslands, and aquatic systems • What’s needed? Interested scientists from outside USGS to collaborate on the project, to suggest new ideas, to test existing models and preliminary results … • See the Land Carbon poster at the NACP poster session

NASA UpdateDiane Wickland and Paula Bontempi Recent NASA selections related to NACP • The Science of Terra and Aqua • Ocean Biology & Biogeochemistry • Carbon Cycle Science (joint with USDA) • NPP Science Team • Carbon Monitoring System Science Definition Team (in review, selection anticipated in March 2011) NASA Carbon Monitoring System Pilot Initiative • Congressional directive to replicate state & national carbon and biomass inventory processes; carry out pre-phase A and pilot initiatives for the development of a CMS • Plan is for two pilot products and a CMS scoping study • Biomass Pilot Product: quantifying terrestrial vegetation carbon stocks • Integrated Emission/Uptake (“Flux”) Product: global product for integrated emission/uptake of atmospheric carbon dioxide • Scoping Study: mapping NASA’s observational and modeling capability and the ability of research community to use this capability to enhance information products to meet policy and decision-making requirements
